Year 1/2

Literacy

In Literacy we have learning about procedural texts. Students have been exploring a number of activities where they have had the opportunity to make play dough, fairy bread and stress balls and wrote about the steps taken to achieve this.  We completed a piece of writing about gold panning from out excursion to Sovereign Hill. We have also been learning to summarise texts in our reading sessions by identifying the author's main points and ideas.

Maths

Students have been learning about different type of measurement over the last couple of weeks. We have been measuring using informal units such as unifix and hands to measure familiar objects and we have been finding the length, volume, mass and capacity of objects.  Over the last couple of weeks we have been doing lots of fun, hands-on activities in Maths.

Humanities

In Humanities, we have been looking at Australian History.  We have been learning about old forms of communication such as Morse Code and we are beginning to look at the Europeans settlers and their voyages to Australia.

Sovereign Hill Excursion

Despite the rain and wind, the Sovereign Hill excursion was a rich and immersive experience for the grade 1/2 students. As the students stepped back in time, they were able to explore firsthand about various aspects of life during the 1850s. The students visited one of the three schools that are at Sovereign Hill, played a game of olden day '9 pin bowling' and saw an old fire station. They explored the old streets where they were able to see the town's shops, including a bakery, a lolly shop and candle shop.

All the students took part in an education session where they learnt about clothes that were worn in the 1800s, different artefacts from this era as well as play some games that young children would have played. They were informed of the different experiences that women had in comparison to men, including limitations on their dress, behaviour, education, and job opportunities. The students panned for gold and a few lucky students were able to take a small flake home with them!

Lastly, the students witnessed a spectacular show of gold smelting. The students were shown a demonstration of a gold pour - where gold is melted down and poured into a huge ingot.

Overall, the students had a fun day, they braved the weather conditions and explored the ancient town with smiles on their faces!

Spelling Bee

On Wednesday September 4th, the Grade 1/2 students participated in an exciting school-wide Spelling Bee! The day kicked off with class-level competitions, where students faced off against their peers to secure a place in the next round. The top five spellers from each grade then advanced to a more challenging round, competing against their entire year level.

After an intense display of spelling skills, the top four students from each year level moved forward to showcase their talents in front of the whole school.

It was a thrilling final round, and we are proud to congratulate Freya from Grade 1 and Cove from Grade 2 for emerging as the champions!

A huge shout-out to all students who participated, cheered on their peers, and made the event a fantastic celebration of learning and fun!
