Galilee STEM MAD news

We are pleased to share some fantastic news about our Year 5 girls, Lila, Darcie M, and Isabella W, who recently represented Galilee at the STEM MAD competition.

Out of over 100 projects from various schools, their project, "The Water Cycle," earned 3rd place overall! They also received a fabulous Prize, a LEGO Education Kit. The judges were impressed by their innovative idea, prototype, and professionalism and believe that these students will represent Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools with excellence. They have now been selected to compete at the national level in Brisbane this November.

We also want to congratulate the Year 3 and Year 4 students who also participated in the event. Your creativity and effort truly shone through, and we are proud of each of you.

Only 12 out of 110 showcase projects have been nominated for this event, and we’re excited that our girls are among them. They will have the opportunity to present their project to visitors, just as they did at the MACS STEM MAD competition.

We look forward to seeing Lila, Darcie, and Isabella shine at the national finals!

The Water Cycle

The Big Idea- Lila D

We noticed that a lot of people waste water so we wanted to come up with a solution. Have you ever turned on the tap and waited for the hot water, and not used it? Imagine how much perfectly clean water you would have just wasted. Did you know that the average household wastes 80% of clean water.

We wanted to think about a way to fix this issue. That’s why we came up with our project, The Water Cycle.

How it works- Darcie M

We called it the Water Cycle because half the water will run down the pipe, and past the U.V light. The light kills the bacteria and then will pass into a separate container that sucks back the water into the drain to be used again. The other half of the water will go into a separate tank, once the tank is filled, it will be brought to less fortunate countries so they have access to clean water.

Our Goal- Isabella W

Our goal is to stop water wastage and help less fortunate countries access clean water. We want to reduce the amount of water that is wasted in the average household. We want to make a difference in our world and inspire young people and the next generation to look after the world.

Maths at Galilee

As you will be aware, improving our pedagogical approach in Matheamtics has been a big focus at Galilee for the past two year.s

This year we have  been introduced to 'Sweaty Brain Time' by James Russo and Jane Hubbard from Monash University. Sweaty Brain Time occurs when students work through  Challenging Mathematics Tasks that make student's brains sweat.

Challening Tasks encourage students to problem-solve, investigations and apply meathematics skills and knowledge to real world problems.  Students are encouraged to work collaboratively to discuss , justify and  share these ideas with each other using a variety of hands-on materials.
