Teaching and Learning Newsletter November 2024

Term 4 is well underway with students undertaking the process of finalising assessments and preparing for exams. Students will then be moving into step-up to prepare for the 2025 academic year.

Goal Setting for Student Success

We encourage our students to continue their journey of self-improvement. Goal setting remains a cornerstone of their long-term success. Just as one wouldn't embark on a journey without a clear destination in mind, it's difficult to achieve success without well-defined goals. Goals provide a roadmap to the future and help students allocate their time and resources wisely.

We kindly request parents and caregivers to engage in meaningful conversations with their children about their goals. Your guidance and support play an essential role in helping them reach their aspirations.

 Fostering Learning Success

As an AVID school, we are committed to nurturing academic excellence. Our teachers are dedicated to assisting students in mastering the Cornell note-taking system. To enhance learning at home, we encourage parents and caregivers to support their children by using the 10-24-7 method. This well-established approach, involving daily note review, question formulation, and weekly summarisation, significantly boosts student confidence and exam results, making it particularly crucial as we approach upcoming assessments.

Organisational skills are key to success. Students are encouraged to maintain well-organised binders that accompany them to all classes, ensuring that they have all the necessary materials readily available. Our "Ready to Learn Monday" led by our AVID Leader, Ms. Amy Cole, continues to provide  students with the opportunity to stock up on binder materials at the AVID Centre each week, ensuring they are always well-prepared for their learning journey.

Our School Alumni Program

We are excited to share the continued impact of our Alumni Program in inspiring our students to pursue their passions and strive for excellence. This program connects current students with past graduates who have achieved success in various fields, offering invaluable insights and motivation.

At the final assembly, on Thursday 24th October the Class of 2023’s Vedant Patel,  addressed the Year 12 students, emphasizing the value of staying connected, joining the alumni community and creating a LinkedIn profile. Vedant encouraged students to maintain ties with the school community, which can open doors to future support, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

At this year’s Valedictory evening on Friday 25th October, we welcomed back Jason Martinez - Foley, an alum from the class 2021 who spoke to our graduating students about his inspirational and steadfast journey and the importance of resilience and dedication in achieving your goals.

Additionally, our STEM students had the unique opportunity on Friday November 1st to hear from John West from the class of 1979, another esteemed alum, who shared his invaluable experiences in the STEM field and discussed pathways for those interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Through these connections, we are thrilled to see our students encouraged by real-life examples of success, helping them envision their own bright futures.

Homework Club for Learning Support

A reminder to all parents and students that Wyndham Central College's Homework Club continues every Wednesday in the Monash Building from 3:10 pm to 4:00 pm. This invaluable resource is facilitated by experienced classroom teachers and provides critical support for students who self-nominate to attend. Whether your child faces challenges with classwork, assignments, or simply seeks a supportive environment to complete homework, our Homework Club offers the ideal space to thrive academically.

We urge parents to motivate their children to attend Homework Club, ensuring they benefit from this valuable support system.

Together, we can empower our students to set and achieve their goals, excel in their studies, and make the most of the resources available to them. Thank you for your ongoing support in fostering a culture of success at Wyndham Central College.
