Shared Stories Anthology - Courage

This term, students across the school have been learning about what it means to be courageous. They have engaged with literature, reflected on their own personal experiences and responded by creating a variety of writing genres - poetry, narrative, journal reflections, letter writing and so on. Some of the writing pieces around the theme 'Courage' will be selected for the Shared Stories Anthology. It is quite exciting for our students to see themselves as published authors.

Here are a few pictures from PrepAK as they engaged with literature and craft and produced writing around the theme courage...

The students responded with their own personal reflections about being brave...

The Scary Scooter

I was brave when I went on the scooter. It was so fast.

Aaron , Prep AK

My Helpful Papa

I was brave when I fell down. I was playing on my scooter and I fell off. My Papa gave me a big hug. It made me feel better.

Emilio, Prep AK

My New Glasses

I was brave when I got my new glasses. They are orange. I love orange.

Jordan, Prep AK

Backflip Bravery

I was brave when I did a backflip in my gymnastics club. Before I did the backflip I felt like I was going to fall. That was scary. I decided I should just try my best. I was really proud.

Sophie, Prep AK

My Scooter

I was brave when I fell off my scooter. I was going really fast. I lost my balance. My mum helped me to feel better. She gave me a hug and a bandaid. I was brave and had to remember to try my best and keep practicing.

And some of the students from Writing Club produced some personal reflective pieces around the theme 'Courage'...

'What Courage Is For Me...'

Courage for me is when someone stands up for someone

Taking a risk

Even risking their life

For someone else

Fighting for what they think is right

Doing what's right

Stopping what they think is wrong and changing that to what is right

Standing up against bullies and stopping them

Even if they are scared, they fight for what is right

Standing up for what they believe

This is what courage is for me.

My Grandma, My 'Ba Ngoai'

This is my way of explaining courage. This is a story about my grandma. I’m 'Viet', so my grandma, which is ‘Ba Ngoai’ in Vietnamese, has told me many stories about her life and how she showed courage during Vietnamese war times.

¨Go Go!¨ This is what my Grandma would imagine and tell herself.  In Vietnam people wouldn't let anyone out of their homes or escape. It was very tragic but my grandma's dream was to escape into the world. She persisted and tried and a month later… she did!  It was terrifying for her. She tried to dodge all the people who were trying to capture her. She was so close but she didn't make it the first time and she got captured for (you won`t believe it) seven months! And this was just because she was trying to leave Vietnam for her safety. After she got out of prison she tried to escape again and this time she made it. But she had to escape on a wooden raft with about 100 people. They didn't know which way they were going. This would have been very scary for my Ba Ngoai.

They finally arrived somewhere they didn't recognise. It was actually Australia! When my grandma arrived, she felt weird in her belly so she went to the doctors and found out she was having a baby! (which was my mum). She was born on the 29th of March in 1990. My grandma had to to raise a baby and look after her mum (my great grandma) but she was strong and would never give up.

Because of what my grandma went through I want to be just like her. She is strong and firece and courageous. I will have the same courage as her.  No dream is too big or too crazy for me.
