Year 5 Poetry

Year 5 have been learning about Poetry this term. We have learnt the different forms of poetry as well as language used in poetry. We have been studying poems with figurative language such as onomatopoeia, idioms, metaphors and similes and personification. We have focussed on ballads. A ballad is a song or a poem that tells a story which can be dramatic, funny, or romantic. Ballads can have multiple verses and Lines 2 and 4 of each verse usually rhyme. We have incorporated our Unit of Inquiry on Migration into our poetry. Students have been learning about convicts in the 1800’s and how convicts impacted the indigenous Australians. They have chosen a convict, free settler or an indigenous Australian to write a ballad about.

Primary Music News

Music plays an important role in our lives. When we study music we learn theoretical knowledge and performance skills which outwork in many areas in our lives.

In Term 3, students have been learning different animal and plant songs such as 'Hairy Harry', which is about a wombat, and they have enjoyed doing actions to match the song. As they learnt the song 'Happy Sun High' they also learnt about five different flowers, found out that plants need sunshine and practiced aural skills using high or low pitched voices. Our Infant students have learnt through songs about belonging and friendship, and our Primary students have been learning to be kind, to share and to help other people.

This term we have also been focusing on instrumental playing and song composition.

Year 3 students have learned to play 'Hot Cross Buns' on the recorder in one lesson! Primary students have been playing different instruments in groups, working in teams and developing their musical skills. This week they will learn to play the folk song ‘Rain rain go away’ on xylophones and use ‘Rainy Rhythm’ to compose their own songs.

Thank you to all students who have spent part of their lunchtime every Tuesday at choir rehearsal. Our students are amazing and they are working hard towards achieving their learning goals.
