WELCOME BACK TO TERM 4 PVNPS families!

To begin this term, the Grade 3/4 students had an incredible adventure to visit Sovereign Hill for their school camp. Camping at this living museum offered students with a unique opportunity to take a step back in time as they got to experience life on the goldfields in 1851. Our students participated in several activities such as:

  • Gold panning
  • Candle making
  • Guided mine tours (Labyrinth)
  • Old-fashioned bowling
  • Red hill Mine tour
  • Education on how people dressed during this time
  • Aura sound and light show
  • Gold Pour demonstration
  • Pantomime
  • Confectionary making demonstration
  • And of course, visiting the famous Sovereign Hill lolly shop!

With the help of our lovely tour guides, students got to experience the challenges that miners faced on the goldfields. They got to go panning for gold, which turned out to be quite difficult. There were a few lucky students who found a few specks of gold!! The AURA sound and light show was definitely a highlight for many students (and teachers). This evening show told the story of the Eureka Rebellion in a very captivating way as the use of lights, sounds, and special effects helped to bring this part of history to life!

Overall, we were very proud of the students for their excellent behaviour and positive attitude. It was great to see their enthusiasm and curiosity develop during this camp as they gained a deeper appreciation for Australia’s history. With camp being new experience for our Grade 3s and many of our Grade 4s, it was fantastic to see the development of new friendships and teamwork put in by everyone! A big thank you to Ms Jones for her hard work in organising this fantastic camp for us!!

For our non-campers, students undertook a passion project where they were able to research and present about a topic of their choice. This project fostered independence and provided them with an opportunity to take charge of their learning. It was fantastic to see so many students enjoy this type of learning.

In week 2, the students have been learning:

Maths: Mass, Volume, and Capacity

As part of their measurement unit, students have been learning about mass and volume. They became human scales by performing the process of hefting to see which item is heavier before using analogue and digital scales to check their actual mass.

Reading: Comprehension strategies in non-fiction texts

In reading, students have been learning comprehension strategies such as predicting, questioning, and summarising for the main idea in non-fiction nexts.

Writing: Writing information texts

Students are learning about the structure of information texts and how to write one. They've learnt what a good information text should include and how to write an fascinating introduction to hook readers into their text.

Discovery: Life on our planet

Students have began to explore their new topic of a Life on our planet. They've recalled their knowledge on living and non-living things and have learned about the characteristics of living things.

Wellbeing: Respectful relationships and digital footprint

As part of the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships resource, students have been learning about the different types of violence and how to prevent it. They have also learned about the importance of digital safety by understanding what a digital footprint is and why we need to be safe when using technology.

That’s it from our 3/4 team!!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and let’s all enjoy the warm and sunny weather (for now)
