Term 4 is always exciting in Grade 1, especially as we recognise how much the students have learned and how much they have grown since the beginning of the year!
In Discovery this term, we are investigating the question, "how does your garden grow?" To begin, 1A walked through our school garden spaces, watched a tour of Costa Georgiardis' garden, and then compiled an extensive list of things that can be found in gardens, including insects, birds, plants, garden equipment, water features and other natural materials. After this, we designed our own garden spaces, including zip lines, pizza ovens and tree houses!
Next we considered how gardens are helpful spaces for bees, butterflies and birds. We are very much looking forward to the hands-on gardening experiences coming up later in the term!
We began our Wellbeing learning for Term 4 by considering the importance of rules - why they exist, how they help us, and what happens when people don't follow rules. During a session of small group games, where we played Snakes and Ladders, Snap and Memory, 1A displayed a fabulous ability to recognise when conflict was beginning in their group, to pause, reflect and work through the issue, and then to recommence playing together in a positive and agreeable way.
Term 4 in Mathematics started with revision of a range of known counting strategies, including 1 more/1 less, 10 more/10 less, counting up to a target number by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, counting on from a range of starting points, ordering numbers from smallest to largest, and using our knowledge of place value (hundreds, tens and ones) to make numbers and solve problems.
Thank you 1A for returning from holidays with such positive and enthusiastic attitudes - I am looking forward to a fabulous Term 4 with you all!
