Year 5 & 6

Around our level

Term 3 is nearly over with only our annual Footy Day to go. Students don’t need to wear school uniform, but can wear their footy clothes or colours.

It has been a term full of fun events, such as the Yarra Road Games Day, the Day Disco, Book Character dress up, District Aths, Hooptime and our School Production. On top of all this, it was a term of significant learning. Hopefully, you are reading the weekly emails, as they give you the topics that we teach in each subject.

Next term, the Year 6 students will write about their primary school memories for the Graduation book. The Year 5 students will write a Christmas story for their Prep buddy. The Year 6 students will participate in a Coding program once a week for a month commencing in Week 2. It will be run by Nicky Rogers from Monash University. Nicky has worked with the students before and they certainly enjoy her expertise. The Year 5 students will participate in a Leadership course. In this course we discuss the roles and expectations of a captain, but it also helps the students prepare for leading the school as Year 6 students. At Yarra Road we believe every Year 6 student is a leader.

Lights, camera, action! Production nights for both casts were amazing. To see the students work together during rehearsals and then on performance night was really good to see. So many students overcame their nerves to produce the best performance that they could. We were very proud of them!

Read below for some of the students’ comments.

My production experience was very fun, even though I was super nervous to begin with. At the start I was freaking out about speaking my lines. After I had done my lines, I felt better. My costume was really fluffy and soft so I was sweating throughout the whole show. Luckily, Zoe R had brought ice packs! So in the end I totally enjoyed Production.

I LOVED production! Production was a great experience for everyone who did it. I loved speaking my lines and playing my role. I was Harold Hare, also known as the golfing dad. I was really lucky as I was chosen to dance with the preps. Production was amazing and I loved how all our hard work paid off!

I really enjoyed the production this year. If it wasn't for production I wouldn't want to keep acting. After I had finished performing, I was a bit sad it was over and wanted to do it again. I played the role of Shelly Tortoise. I had 38 lines and two solo singing parts. I didn't forget any of my lines which I'm really happy about. I'm really proud of myself for going out there and just doing it, despite being nervous. I had all my friends and family there cheering me on. Overall I had an amazing experience for my last production at primary school!

Last Wednesday was Cast A production. It was a bit stressful at the start because I had to get changed, find my ears (because I lost them) and put my microphone on for testing. It slowly got better. Everyone was excited but the nerves were coming. Of course there were some mistakes but the audience didn't even notice. I think it was a good last production.

Last Wednesday was production for Cast A. I played Harvey Hare, the villain. We arrived at George Wood on the day of and went through a technical rehearsal with mics and lighting. That night I arrived and went straight backstage for my costume and face paint. I had a few quick changes throughout the show, but I managed it pretty well. I was so nervous, especially for my small solo in Scene 3. But overall I had an amazing time!

This year's production was my favourite one. I loved talking and I was very happy with my role. I worked really hard on remembering my lines. I was so excited. I was also really nervous before I went on but I told myself it would be perfectly fine and it would be so fun. I was playing Harold Hare and I had 16 lines. I loved my role. I loved production.

-Violet S

Production was a lot of fun. I was in Cast B but I went to watch Cast A. They did great! Overall, it was so much fun. We started off backstage, we got into our costumes  and watched on the TV. It’s sad that it was our last production for primary school but we had a great time.

I really liked production because we were animals so we got to wear face paint. I played Hip it was really fun because I was in most of the scenes. I had a costume change as well which was exciting. Overall I really enjoyed the production and it was really fun doing it with my friends.

When rehearsing before the night at school I  felt good but on the night I don't know what happened but I just got really nervous and felt like I couldn't do it at all but I did it and I was proud of myself.
