Prep

Around Our Level

A big congratulations to all of our Prep students for their amazing participation in our whole school Production of ‘ZOOM’ at Yarra Valley Grammar School last Wednesday and Thursday evening. It was wonderful to see so many parents, relatives, special friends and grandparents in attendance. The feedback has been wonderful, and our students stole the show with their performance of ‘Believe in your dreams’. They looked fantastic in their costumes, and we were so proud of the way they conducted themselves at both the technical rehearsals and backstage on the night.

In Literacy, we have been learning about the short ‘I’ and short ‘o’ sound, as in ‘itchy’ and ‘octopus’. We have been revising our sight words using flashcards and on the TV in our classrooms.  We have been reading Big Books and non-fiction texts, revising the days of the week and months of the year, undertaking reading conferences with our students and completing a number of different assessments in both Literacy and Maths. We successfully shared over 30 books in class together to complete the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge, which is a fantastic achievement.

In Maths, we have been learning about tally marks and collecting data. Our students interviewed their classmates to collect data about cats and dogs, apples and bananas and unifix colours. The children discovered that counting by 5’s is a much easier way of recording data when counting. The children used the data that they collected to create simple column graphs, which included a heading and an axis. The children were asked questions about which items were the most popular and the least popular. This week we are revising writing our numbers to 20 and using a double tens frame to make and represent teen numbers.

In Wellbeing, we have been continuing to develop skills for learning to ask for help in the school yard when there is a problem or friendship issue. We can ask for help from yard duty teachers, the office staff, Education Support staff and first aid if we are injured or hurt.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Forte in Prep A, who has been planning and teaching lessons in numeracy and other lessons over the past three weeks. She also assisted with excursions and was backstage on both nights of Production. We would like to thank Amy for the valuable contribution she has made over her teaching placement at Yarra Road Primary. We wish her all the very best in her future teaching career.
