Mandarin
Welcome back to school and to Term Four!
How exciting it is to have you all back with us in the Mandarin classroom. We have loved touching base with you these past couple of weeks and getting back into the rhythm of language learning.
Foundation
Students have explored their holidays through Chinese language, pictures and writing. Students wrote down ‘In my holidays…’ in language and then drew what they did in the holidays and wrote a short sentence about it (see photos below). This week students have begun their linked unit ‘People share stories in many ways’ to explore different ways traditional Chinese culture is represented through different art forms. We can’t wait to see what these amazing Foundies create!
Year One
Students have begun looking at emotions this term, using this knowledge to explore their holidays through Chinese language, pictures and writing. Students wrote down Happy and Unhappy in language and then drew what they did in the holidays and wrote a short sentence about it (see photos below). This week students furthered their knowledge of emotion in Chinese language with Glad and Sad and linked it to their hobbies.
Year Two
Students have begun looking at emotions this term to link with their classroom unit ‘Feelings and culture can be expressed creatively’. Students have learnt basic emotions and used this knowledge to explore their holidays through Chinese language, pictures and writing. Students wrote down Happy and Unhappy in language and then drew what they did in the holidays and wrote a short sentence about it. This week students furthered their knowledge of emotion in Chinese language with Glad and Sad and practised writing the characters on a whiteboard and seesaw before recording themselves saying the words.
Year Three
In Year Three, students have been learning how to create a calendar in Chinese for the year 2025! This engaging project has provided them with a fantastic opportunity to explore number concepts, as they practise counting and understanding dates in Mandarin. The use of technical tools has also been a key part of their learning, allowing them to enhance their digital skills while designing their calendars. This hands-on activity not only reinforces their language skills but also helps them develop important mathematical and technological competencies. We’re excited to see their creativity and collaboration shine through in this project!
Year Four
In Year Four, students have been immersing themselves in learning how to talk about holidays in Mandarin for the first week. This topic has allowed them to express their experiences and plans, using new vocabulary and phrases. Impressively, some students have taken their learning a step further by incorporating what they learned last term about various activities, crafting long sentences entirely in Chinese! This creative application of their language skills not only enhances their fluency but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the language and culture. We’re proud of their progress and enthusiasm for learning! We hope Year Four have enjoyed their camp in Week Two!
Year Five
In Year Five, students are revisiting the core expectations of being kind, safe, and respectful in Chinese, reinforcing these essential values within our school community. As part of their learning journey, they are exploring various jobs in Mandarin, expanding their vocabulary and understanding of the diverse careers available in the world. This engaging integration of language and life skills encourages students to appreciate different professions while fostering a supportive and respectful environment. It’s wonderful to see our Year Five students embracing these concepts and developing their language skills simultaneously!
Year Six
We are thrilled to share what Year Six has been working on as part of our upcoming Exhibition! Our students are diving deep into the fascinating world of traditional medicine from various countries. We look forward to seeing the insight of Year Six students!
