Student Learning Snapshots

PREP SNAPSHOT 

Welcome back to Term 4! 

We have had a great start in prep with smooth transitions back into school routine. 

In Literacy, students have learned that 2 or 3 letters together can make one sound e.g. ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘tch’, ‘ck’ and ‘th’. Students have been reading, writing and building words with these sounds in them e.g. ship, duck, watch, chop or think. Students have been also learning how to write a recount of an experience by using the words ‘First’, ‘Next’ and ‘Then’ to support sequencing their ideas. 

In Maths, students have been continuing to build, name and write numbers up to 30. Students have been reviewing skills around measurement and mass that we learned last term. 

Our Inquiry topic this term is around investigating the 5 senses. Students have loved exploring sense of touch in week one, and sense of sight in term two. 

Reminders: 

• Library is on Mondays. 
• Please return any take home readers back on Mondays so these can be swapped to new ones for the week.

YEAR 1/2 SNAPSHOT 

Welcome back to all our families to Term 4! 

We have had an amazing start in the Grade 1 & 2 classrooms and the students should be congratulated on their calm and engaged attitudes for this our final term of learning for 2024! 

In Literacy, our Grade 1 and 2 students have been further developing our spelling skills through our SoundsWrite program and are doing really well with our dictation sentences. Students have also been further developing their literacy skills by writing descriptive paragraphs, where students have been using our 5 senses (sight, taste, smell, touch, hear) to further enhance our writing. Students have been reviewing previously learned parts of speech too; proper nouns, pronouns and also creating summaries and paragraph shrinking. 

In Maths, students have been continuing to learn their fact fluency with doubles, friends of ten and our number recognition skills by writing numbers in the hundreds, thousands and ten-thousands. We have been learning about sharing and grouping as we move into multiplication and division for our Grade 2 students. 

For our Knowledge unit, our first area of learning is in the Human Body and we have commenced with learning about the skeletal system and all about the bones in our bodies. Students have enjoyed creating their own movable hand skeletons with strings and paper straws 

The 1 / 2 Experience night with DJ Mitch and our ‘DJ in our PJs’ event was a great success with students and staff all having an amazing time. Thank you to all staff that made this possible. Everyone sure had their dancing shoes on!!!

Reminders: 

• Library is on Tuesdays - please make sure that your child/dependant has their library books to return. 
• Term 4 is ‘No Hat = No Play’ at HBPS, so please make sure that hats are kept at school. 
• Please ensure that your child/dependant brings their fruit/vegetables for our ‘Brain Food’ time in the morning and also has their drink bottle each day.

YEAR 5/6 SNAPSHOT 

Welcome Back to Term 4!

We hope everyone had a restful break and is ready for the exciting final term of the year. Our Year 5/6 students have hit the ground running, diving into some fascinating learning activities.

In English, students have begun reading biographies of significant Australians. Over the coming weeks, they will each choose an Australian to research and write their own biography, highlighting the impact their chosen figure has had on our nation. Additionally, students have been watching speeches and analysing what makes them persuasive and engaging. This will be especially useful for our Year 5 students as they take on debating, while Year 6 students are gearing up for their graduation speeches.

In Maths, we've been building on students' knowledge of fractions, and they are now applying this understanding to real-life contexts involving chance and probability.

A big highlight of the term so far has been the Colour Run! Our Year 6 student leaders did a fantastic job helping to organise and run the event. It was wonderful to see the school community come together for such a fun and colourful day.

We are looking forward to a busy and productive term ahead!

SPECIALIST 

Welcome to Term 4!

Term 3 came to a brilliant end in Performing Arts with students having the chance to record a video performance of their indigenous stories. Students enjoyed creating masks and puppets to bring their characters to life. We recorded videos of each team performance, using the green screen as our background. It was really fun working on our scripts and choosing the backgrounds that were used to bring these videos to life. Younger students learned traditional indigenous stories such as ‘Tiddalick the Frog’ and ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours’. While older students wrote, rehearsed and performed their own original stories inspired by indigenous dreamtime stories.

In the beginning of Term 4, our focus will be on playing music together with a small group. Students in junior school will be working on playing songs together using instruments such as glockenspiels, marimbas and djembes. They will be working on listening to their group and staying in time as they play. Students in the upper years have started working on their 2024 Mini-Bands projects. In week 1 students chose their groups and song choices for their Mini-Band and now will spend time learning and rehearsing their song together. Students have chosen their role in the band based on which instruments they would like to improve on. It will be great to see what masterpieces these Mini-Bands can create!

We are excited for a big Term 4 in the Arts Centre!
