Grade 5

Reminders And Dates For Grade 5 Students

Welcome Back to Term 4!

We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful break. The Grade 5 Team is feeling refreshed and excited to finish off what has been an incredible year so far!

Leadership Focus

As we head into Term 4, leadership will be a key focus for our Grade 5 students as they prepare for the transition to Grade 6. Students will be given various opportunities to step up as leaders within the classroom and beyond.

Buddies and Leadership Opportunities

This term, Grade 5 students will also visit Bop Bop Kindergarten to meet some of the future preps who will transition to Barwon Heads Primary School in 2025. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to demonstrate their leadership skills as they begin forming relationships with their Buddies in anticipation of next year. As role models, they will have the chance to support and guide these younger students as they transition into school life. At the end of the year, each Grade 5 student will create and gift their Buddy a picture storybook, which will help further support their transition.

Camp News

In preparation for our much-anticipated camp, students have been given a medical form and packing list for Grade 5 Camp, which takes place in Week 6 (Wednesday 15th November - Friday 17th November). We’ve asked students to place these forms directly in their bags, but we send through an electronic version for families. Please check Compass for further event details.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding camp, or if cost is a concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Please refer to your classroom teacher as your first point of contact, and they can re-direct you accordingly.

Homework

Homework sheets will continue this term, and we’ll aim to send home hard copies with students each week. An electronic version can also be provided for any students who may forget theirs at school! The focus of these homework tasks is to help students develop positive habits and routines in preparation for secondary school, particularly in managing their time and organisation. Should these tasks ever become stressful for your child, please let us know so we can work on them together in the classroom until they feel more confident.

Thank you for your ongoing support. We’re excited for the term ahead and look forward to finishing the year on a high note!

Kind regards,

The Grade 5 Team

LITERACY:

Over the next four weeks in reading and writing, we will be focusing on interpreting advertisements that we see in everyday life and how they send a message to consumers through a variety of techniques. During book club students will be continuing to read and discuss their chosen books, sharing their interpretations, and engage in conversations about themes, characters, and ideas. Students will be conducting spelling and vocabulary investigations by exploring word origins, meanings and patterns to enhance their understanding with a connection to our inquiry topic. Students will use their understanding of advertising to create their own advertisements.

NUMERACY:

Number & Algebra: We will be revising our multiplicative thinking with a view to improving our fluency, recall and confidence in preparation for more difficult concepts in Grade 6.

Measurement & Geometry: We will be investigating location and grid coordinates this term through hands-on interactive learning tasks.

Statistics & Probability: We will be analysing statistics by interpreting data that will align with our inquiry focus looking at consumerism. Additionally, we will be conducting hands-on experiments to explore chance and probability.

INQUIRY

In Term 4, we will be exploring the role we play in being consumers. We will critically analyse how we are targeted through product design and advertisements. To investigate this topic thoroughly, students will plan, design and launch their own product, as part of a 'Shark Tank' expo. The School Community will be invited to our Shark Tank Expo and be asked to vote on their favourite choice based on a number of key criteria.

SPECIALISTS:

Physical Education:

To begin Term Four, students will build cardiovascular fitness, balance and coordination, whilst also continuing to develop cooperative and team work skills, through Jump Rope.

Students will also have an opportunity to link movement sequences though dance (Folk).

Art: In the first part of the term, students will engage with printmaking and learn about influential mid to late twentieth-century artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Bridget Riley.

S.T.E.M: During STEM sessions this term students will be working on activities around plants and how they grow. They will then use this knowledge to educate their new buddies about what’s in the garden, the life cycle of a sunflower and how to plant a seedling.

Global Studies: In Global Studies this term, students are exploring the rich culture of the Wadawurrung people. They’ll learn about the Wadawurrung language, traditional stories, and cultural practices. Students will also discover the nation’s unique technologies, such as tools and sustainable ways of living. This learning promotes respect for Indigenous heritage and deepens students' understanding of Australia’s First Nations.

School Wide Positive Behaviour & Wellbeing:

Over the next four weeks grade 5 students will be learning about and practising the Character Strengths of Persistence, Curiosity, Creativity and Forgiveness.

They will be learning about Respectful Relationships and positive self-talk.

Routines and Behaviours will be explicitly taught and practised. For example, this week the focus was on "Transitioning Calmly and Quietly".

The term has got off to a great start and the Grade 5 students have lots to look forward to including; getting to know the future prep students, the leadership process for next year and camp.
