Reminders And Dates For Grade 1 Students
Sovereign Hill Excursion - Friday November 8
Swimming - December 2 - 13
LITERACY:
Reading: At the beginning of term four the Grade 1 students will have a strong focus on comprehension of fiction texts. We will be considering how the characters in our books might be feeling and why they take certain actions. We will also focus on the setting of the story and the problem the characters face and how the problem is solved/resolved.
It is really important that the children continue to read daily with an adult and to practise retelling the stories and information from the texts that they have been reading.
Writing: In Writing the Grade 1 students will be focussing on planning and writing imaginative texts, writing about their memories and writing about a stimulus. The children will be encouraged to use strategies and knowledge that they have learnt through our explicit Grammar lessons and Writing lessons. The students will continue to use their Writer’s Notebook entries to record, develop and expand on their ideas for Writing.
Speaking and Listening: In Grade one the students are involved in a variety of Speaking And Listening opportunities such as Community Circles, Share Time, Think-Pair-Share and Turn & Talk. These opportunities occur throughout the day and all children are involved in the activities.
NUMERACY:
Number & Algebra: During Maths sessions this term, students will continue to focus on correct number formation, while developing their understanding of place value and the number system. We will be revisiting and extending their understanding of mathematical operations such as addition and subtraction. This term there will be a heavy emphasis on problem solving, where students will apply their knowledge of the mathematical concepts covered this year to real world situations.
Measurement & Geometry: 2D shapes and 3D objects
Statistics & Probability: Graphing and Data
INQUIRY:
This term our topic is 'Then And Now'. The students will be investigating how children and their families lived in the past and compare that to their own lives now. Excitingly we have an excursion to Sovereign Hill planned for the beginning of November which will give the children insight into what life and school was like in Australia during the 1800’s.
