Head of Secondary

Welcome to Term 4

Hello and welcome back to Term 4. So much has happened already, with the recent holiday period fast becoming a distant memory. Our VCE Year 12 students spent some of their holidays returning to school to complete practice exams before the VCAA exams commence with English on Tuesday 29 October.

The cohort are just days away from finishing their studies and we look forward to celebrating the ‘Class of 2024’ across Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 October festivities. All parents are most welcome to attend the whole school Year 12 ‘Thank You’ assembly on Tuesday 22 October, commencing at 9:05 am in the Gym.

A reminder to Year 12 families to purchase their Valedictory tickets by Friday 8 November in readiness for the main event on Wednesday 20 November if you haven’t done so already.

This week, there has been a sense of ‘handing over the baton’ in Secondary. In the midst of juggling final arrangements for our Year 12 festivities, on Tuesday 15 October we hosted all 2025 Year 7 families for the first time at the annual Dinner and Information evening. Over 180 people attended the event in the Gym and it was wonderful to see established Bayside families mingling with those who are brand new to our community. The best part of this occasion, apart from the yummy food, was providing an ‘Amazing Race’ activity experience for this brand-new cohort so they could start forming new connections.

A new parent at the end of the night shared with me how their daughter approached them with two girls they had not met before and kindly introduced them as her ‘besties’. My prayer is that new long-term friendships are formed across our Year 7 Transitions and Orientation program and last beyond their Bayside Secondary years.

Finally, tickets sales have now closed for our reimagined Year 10 & 11 Formal on Wednesday 30 October at Settlers Run Golf & Country Club. Clearly these students are very excited and can’t wait for the time to arrive. As a College, we look forward to sharing this time with them and are glad that these students have an opportunity to socialise, dress up, enjoy delicious food, dance, and have a fun night out with friends outside of school hours in a safe environment. I look forward to sharing more details with you in the next Newsletter release. In the meantime, take care and God bless. - Mr James Kumnick

Indonesian Tour 2024

From the 15th to the 26th of September, Mr Manning and I had the opportunity to accompany 8 Years 9 and 10 Indonesian students to our first Educational and Cultural Immersion Program in Bali and Nusa Lembongan. We cannot be prouder of how the students embrace every activity from joining the Kalam Kudus Christian School to snorkelling, 2 – 3 hours bike riding, watching the Kecak Dance in Uluwatu, Watching the wildlife and show in Bali Marine, visiting the Butterfly Park, Tegenungan Waterfall, Ubud Monkey Forest, shopping to name a few. The Trip was an unforgettable experience for all of us.

The benefits of this immersion program are invaluable for students to experience starting from fostering, independence, understanding and cooperation, learning beyond one’s comfort zone, promoting lasting friendships, helping to make global connections and increase global awareness of Indonesia, learning different currencies, being more aware of Indonesia bureaucratic systems and increase the cultural understanding of Australia’s closest neighbour mostly it foster the growth of the students’ perspectives on the global world and Indonesia. - Bu Chandra Shockman

Richmond High Performance Day

ring the school holidays on the 3rd of October the Richmond Football club provided the opportunity for four Year 11 & 12 students to participate in a “High Performance Day”.

The day offered students the chance to engage in interactive sessions related to running mechanics, strength and conditioning, nutrition, and football-specific acceleration. Professionals including an olympic athlete and various Richmond employees from their nutrition and high performance department were involved in the day. The day also offered the opportunity to prompt students about various study and work options in the sport science field .Thanks to Lacey for passing on the attached photos. - Mr Josh Goschnick

"A highlight for me was the talk from the dietitian who told us what foods we should eat before a sports game and when to eat them. She showed us some of the schedules that AFL players use to determine when and what foods to eat depending on the game time. After the talk we got let out to go make some protein balls which were pretty good. It was a really good day as a whole and is best suited for year 11s and I would love to go back next year.” - Tom, 11

“Being able to participate in the high performance day at Richmond was very beneficial to me as I hope to pursue sport science after school, and am grateful I got to spend the day learning and participating in sport activities at the footy club.” - Sarah, 11

“My highlight was making the protein balls and the stretching and trampoline part was fun. I do think it was a good excursion for us (Year 11s) as it allows us to have another option to think about regarding what happens when we leave school.” - Lacey, 11

Staff vs Student Basketball

This week marked the final Staff Vs Students challenge for 2024. After a hard-fought contest, staff defeated the students 28-20 at basketball proving that even though they only have a week left of their higher education, they still have much to learn on the court.

Staff vs Students Bake-Off

Last week was Bayside’s inaugural Staff Vs Students Bake-Off! Our expert panel of judges sampled an assortment of baked treats and sweets. Congratulations to our students who were awarded with first for an incredible lemon meringue bombe alska and second for a ginger loaf. Miss Partridge representing staff was awarded third for her delicious bikkies! We can’t wait for the next Bake-Off competition!

Year 11 Active Volunteering

The Year 11 class went to Pantry Plus to weed and maintain the kitchen gardens we set up earlier this year. They did a great job harvesting snow peas and weeding all the garden beds. Pantry Plus has been an amazing community partner for the VM program this year and I look forward to working with them more closely in 2025. - Mr Ken Berry

Community Market Update

The Year 10, 11 & 12 VM students did an awesome job running stalls during the last market. Stall fees and net profits from their stalls raised $700, which is roughly 16 months of sponsorship for Anton, Riri and Bayen in Indonesia. A massive thankyou goes to everyone who helped set up the market and to Justin and Hamish Mason for all their hard work. - Mr Ken Berry

7OES Surfing at Phillip Island

Our Year 7 Outdoor Environment Studies class kicked off this term with an exciting day of surfing at Phillip Island! Under sunny skies, students quickly picked up their skills, thanks to the expert coaching from the Island Surf School. They eagerly paddled out, catching their first waves and showcasing impressive progress.

This fantastic day not only offered valuable learning experiences but also allowed students to bond and appreciate our beautiful natural environment. It was a memorable start to the term, filled with laughter, teamwork, and the thrill of surfing! - Mr James Siede
