Teaching & Learning at Milgate

Who We Are

Milgate City Marathon

Today, our Year 6 students took part in the annual Milgate City Marathon - an experience that stretches far beyond physical endurance.

This event is intentionally designed to build independence, resilience and real-world problem-solving skills. Students worked in teams to navigate Melbourne’s public transport system, applying their understanding of train lines, tram routes, timetables and schedules to move from point A to point B - and often to point C - safely and efficiently. When plans shifted, as they often do in real life, students adapted. They re-read timetables, reassessed travel times and adjusted their routes accordingly. These moments of productive challenge are where some of the deepest learning occurs.

The learning was rich and authentic.

Students:

  • Interpreted train and tram timetables

  • Calculated travel times between locations

  • Managed schedules to ensure they returned on time

  • Handled money responsibly when purchasing lunch

  • Problem-solved when trains were delayed or plans needed adjusting

  • Collaborated as a team to make decisions under time constraints

Perhaps most impressive was the way our students represented Milgate in the wider community. Their maturity, teamwork and respectful conduct were exceptional. They navigated busy public spaces with confidence and demonstrated the personal and social capabilities we intentionally nurture in our classrooms every day.

The success of the Marathon was not accidental. It was the result of significant pre-work in classrooms; building knowledge of transport systems, budgeting, time management and teamwork skills. Our teachers carefully prepared students for every scenario, ensuring they were ready to think critically and act responsibly.

We also extend our sincere thanks to our parent volunteers. Your support allowed this complex day to run smoothly and safely. It was a powerful partnership between school and home.

The Milgate City Marathon is a reminder that education is not only about content knowledge,  it is about equipping young people with the confidence, independence and problem-solving skills to thrive in the real world.

We are incredibly proud of our students.
