Year 5/6 News
Sean and Precious
Our Year 5/6 students are currently reading Chapters 7 and 8 of Blueback by Tim Winton. In these chapters, students are exploring the deepening relationship between Abel and Blueback, while also examining the powerful connection between people and the natural world.
Our main focus during reading lessons is developing strong inferring skills. Students are learning to “read between the lines” by using clues from the text, character actions, dialogue, and their own background knowledge to work out what is not directly stated. They are practising how to justify their thinking by referring to specific evidence from the chapters.
We are also closely analysing descriptive language and how it shapes the reader’s understanding of setting and mood. Students are identifying vivid imagery, sensory details, and carefully chosen words that bring the ocean to life. Through discussion and annotation, they are exploring how the author’s language choices influence how we visualise scenes and interpret characters’ emotions.
It has been wonderful to see students engaging thoughtfully with the text and confidently sharing their inferences during class discussions.
Students are currently finalising their narrative writing pieces, and it has been wonderful to see the creativity and effort they have poured into their stories. Throughout this unit, students have worked hard to plan, draft, revise and publish engaging narratives that capture their readers’ attention from the very beginning.
Many students have chosen exciting adventure themes, while others have explored mystery, suspense, and even unexpected genres beyond these. It has been fantastic to see such a wide range of imaginative ideas emerging in the classroom, with unique settings, compelling characters and original storylines.
A strong focus in our writing lessons has been developing meaningful conflict. Students have created interesting problems for their characters to face, carefully building tension and raising the stakes as their stories progress. It has been especially pleasing to see students experimenting with plot twists and unexpected turns to keep their readers engaged and eager to find out what happens next.
As they complete their final edits, students are paying close attention to structure, descriptive language, and clarity to ensure their narratives are polished and impactful. We are incredibly proud of the creativity, persistence and growth they have demonstrated as young authors.

Year 5/6 students have been exploring the Cartesian plane in a creative and engaging way. They are currently designing and constructing their own Cartesian plane artworks, carefully plotting ordered pairs to create detailed and visually impressive designs.
As part of this challenge, students are not only focusing on accurate plotting, but also developing confidence in naming and identifying coordinates they can see within their designs. They are practising how to read and write ordered pairs correctly, paying close attention to the position of points across all four quadrants. This has strengthened their understanding of how the x- and y-axes work together to locate exact positions on a grid.
This project will form part of our upcoming Go Public event before the end of term, where students will proudly showcase their mathematical creations. It has been wonderful to see them combining precision with creativity, demonstrating that mathematics can be both accurate and artistic. We look forward to sharing their impressive work with you soon.

In Inquiry, our Year 5/6 students have been learning about Federation and what it meant for Australia as a nation. They have explored the positive impacts of Federation, including the uniting of the colonies, the creation of a national government, and the development of shared laws and systems that helped shape modern Australia.
At the same time, students have been engaging in important discussions about the negative impacts Federation had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They are learning that while Federation brought opportunities for some Australians, it excluded First Nations peoples from decision-making processes and denied them rights and recognition. Students have examined how policies and attitudes at the time led to long-lasting consequences for Aboriginal communities.
A strong focus throughout this unit has been building respect for cultures and cultural backgrounds. Students are developing empathy by considering different perspectives and reflecting on how historical events affected different groups of people in different ways. Through thoughtful conversations and critical thinking, they are deepening their understanding of Australia’s history and the importance of acknowledging both achievements and injustices.
We are proud of the maturity and sensitivity students are showing as they explore these complex topics and continue to grow as informed, respectful citizens.
We have two very exciting events coming up as we approach the end of term!
In Week 9, our Year 5/6 students will be participating in the much-anticipated Sleepover. This special event is a wonderful opportunity for students to strengthen friendships, build independence, and create lasting memories together. There will be a range of engaging activities designed to encourage teamwork, resilience and lots of fun in a safe and supportive environment. More detailed information regarding timings, expectations and packing requirements will be shared with families shortly.
In Week 10, we will be hosting our Go Public event. This is a celebration of learning, where students will proudly showcase their work from across the term. Families will have the opportunity to see the effort, creativity and growth students have demonstrated in various subject areas. It is always a highlight of the term, as students take ownership of their learning and confidently share their achievements with the wider school community.
We are looking forward to two meaningful and memorable weeks ahead as we wrap up a fantastic term together.
