Harmony Day
On Friday the 21st of March Mortlake College celebrated Harmony Day. Harmony Day is celebrated annually and originated in 1999 as a rebrand of the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
We created a mural of self-portraits with kind messages to each other, showing our uniqueness but also how we all fit together. The grade one and two students did an amazing job performing the song ‘Better Together’ at our assembly.
Everyone dressed in orange for the day. Orange was chosen as the colour for Harmony Day because it signifies social communication, meaningful conversations, freedom of ideas and the encouragement of mutual respect. These are all key elements of a harmonious and inclusive society.
We will continue to foster an environment where everyone belongs and can have a positive learning experience at our school.
FOOD STUDIES NEWS MARCH 2025
This year we are introducing a Food Technology Program that connects all Food Technology subjects from year 2 through to VCE.
We aim to develop lifelong food preparation skills as well as an enthusiasm for cooking, nutrition, and wellbeing.
Each subject will look at the following areas through a progressive continuum :
-Healthy Eating and Nutrition
-Ingredients
-Food Origins and Food Production/Processing
-Cooking Skills
-Equipment and Utensils
-Tasting and Reviewing
-Hygiene and Safety
-Sustainability and Menu Planning
FRESH PRODUCE
To help with food origins and sustainability, our previous school gardens are being upgraded and we hope to have some tasty crops.
We would love to be able to use as much local produce as possible so if you do have an excess of any products throughout the year we would appreciate any donations. Alternatively, a field trip to see primary producers would also be of great benefit in the understanding of food origins and food production.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS
On Wednesdays our year 2-5 students participate in the program, and any extra parent assistance is very much appreciated. If you would like to volunteer, please contact your child’s teacher to check which week they are in the kitchen.
Please Note: all volunteers need to have an OH&S induction prior to volunteering in a classroom
We are also in need of some 2 or 4L ice-cream containers!!!!
