Prayers

This week we join with Catholics and people all over the world in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday. Pope Francis was a compassionate and humble servant leader of the Church. May he rest in the peace of Christ.

We remember in prayer Raymond Round, father-in-law of staff member Meaghan Round. Raymond had been a Marist student during his junior years, and his father Benjamin was a teacher here. We commend Raymond to God almighty and keep his wife Pamela and family in our prayers.

Community Masses

Our regular Monday, Wednesday and Friday Masses will begin next week.

Gospel Reflection

Excerpt from Easter Sunday Gospel, 20th April – Luke 24:1-12 (JB)

On the first day of the week, at the first sign of dawn, the women went to the tomb with the spices they had prepared. They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, but on entering discovered that the body of the Lord Jesus was not there. As they stood there not knowing what to think, two men in brilliant clothes suddenly appeared at their side. Terrified, the women lowered their eyes. But the two men said to them, 'Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here; he is risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee: that the Son of Man had to be handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, and rise again on the third day?' And they remembered his words.

After the Passover supper and the washing of feet on Holy Thursday, Good Friday recalls Jesus’ unimaginably painful death on a cross—a place absent of God and full of shame. But Jesus’ horrific death, anticipated by Jesus after Peter declares Jesus the Messiah, is not the end. At the new dawn of a new week, the women who have prepared for the next part of the burial ritual find an open tomb with linen cloths and fearfully encounter two illuminated figures. The women learn that Jesus is risen, no longer in this place of death. Somehow what was the end is the beginning. A story of a shameful death has become a story of life and hope that springs eternal. As we begin a new term, we pray that the hope and joy of the Easter season will lift us and sustain us for the path ahead. And so as Marists, we join with Christians all over the world and with Pope Francis, who in his final Easter message celebrated, ‘Christ is risen, alleluia!’.

+ God of new life,

We remember at Easter that you poured out your love for all humanity and all creation,

Through the suffering of your son Jesus who died and rose to new life.

Help us to seek new life in you, and to live each day with joy, hope and humility.
