Grade 1 Report

This term the Grade One students have been learning about big feelings and how to deal with them using a range of strategies. Each grade read a story by Anna Walker called Mr Huff. Students were encouraged to make predictions and connections with the setting and characters in the story.

As part of the grade one wellbeing program, we watched a performance presented by Meerkat productions. This performance was based on the Mr Huff story, drawing out the different emotions felt by the main character Bill. Students interacted with the performance enthusiastically and were able to draw on their own emotional literacy to help Bill on his journey.

After the performance students made links between our Zones of Regulations in each classroom. They were also able to discuss the strategies created in Health and Wellbeing lessons and utilise their ‘emotional toolboxes’.

We brainstormed different ways students could shift their emotions from ‘being in a huff’ to embracing those feelings and creating positive attitudes. Students used their ideas to create a Mr Huff collage and write and draw different strategies they could use if they were in a ‘huff’. Their collage included the use of recycled newspaper helping students fine motor skills when creating the right shape of paper to fit into their drawing of Mr Huff.

Some different strategies were to:

Sing – Fiona

Listen to music – Riley M

Find a quiet space – Lavish

Cuddle a toy – Grace

Bubble breathing – Sasha

Read a book – Alexander
