This term, the Preps have begun learning about our local community in Humanities. We were so lucky and had two terrific experiences, just in this week!
Our Prep students had an exciting and memorable day when local firefighters visited the school! The children were thrilled to explore the fire truck, climb inside, and see all the equipment up close. The highlight of the visit was getting to use the fire hose—there were lots of smiles and laughter as the students took turns spraying water like real firefighters. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that helped the children learn about fire safety in a fun and engaging way.
Prep students went on their first exciting excursion to the South Melbourne Market. They explored the vibrant stalls, met friendly shop owners, and discovered how the market supports the local community. The experience helped them learn about the important roles people play in making their local community special. We are so proud of the children and how they represented SMPS so beautifully on their first ever excursion!
It's been a busy couple of weeks of learning in Year 1! We have participated in a range of activities including using bundling and manipulatives to understand two-digit place value in Maths, telling kids jokes and performing puppet plays to improve our fluency and learning about different animal body parts and habitats through Science investigations. The students have been so focused and having fun along the way!
Our Year 2 students were fluttering with excitement as their classroom was visited by butterflies and other insects as part of their minibeast in-visit! Armed with magnifying glasses and boundless enthusiasm, they embarked on a thrilling journey of exploration as they uncovered the secrets of these magnificent tiny creatures. Through hands on exploration and observation, the children got up close and personal with these wonderful critters. They gained so much knowledge and are excited to apply this in their upcoming unit on insects.
In their first Passion Projects session of Term 2, Year 3 students enthusiastically explored the world of paper crafts. Given a range of creative options, many students chose to make bookmarks—a wonderful reflection of their love for reading. The session was filled with teamwork and creativity, as students supported one another and demonstrated impressive independence in solving problems and bringing their ideas to life. Passion Project sessions are a great opportunity to strengthen our classroom community and build positive relationships as we learn and create together.
The Year 4 students have been spending many of their English lessons on the edge of their seats as we delve deeper into The Legend of Podkin One-Ear, a story full of twists, turns, and cliffhangers! We’ve been exploring persuasive devices, such as high modality words, to share our opinions on what Podkin should do at key moments in the story.
This term, we’ve also introduced fluency pairs once a week. It’s been fantastic to see the Year 4s developing their expression and phrasing as they read aloud to a partner.
The Year 5 students had a roaring good time at the Melbourne Zoo on Monday, 12th May. They explored the important topic of endangered animals and learned how pollution is threatening wildlife and their habitats. While it was clear that humans have caused many of these problems, students also discovered that humans can be the key to the solutions. They returned to school buzzing with ideas on how they can make a difference and protect these precious creatures. Next week, they'll channel their passion into project work for the upcoming Science Expo. A big thank you to our amazing parent volunteers — we couldn’t have done it without you!
Over the past three weeks, our Year 6 students have been diving deep into the world of fractions! We’ve explored key skills such as computing with related fractions, expanding using the lowest common multiples to add or subtract, and reducing fractions to their simplest form. It’s been fantastic to see students not only mastering the skill but also making real world connections, such as using fractions when combining amounts for different recipes. These past few weeks have challenged and extended our thinking, and we’re incredibly proud of the persistence and effort shown by all students. Well done, Year 6!
