Year 5/6 Report
Term 1 2025
With Term 1 of 2025 almost complete we would like to say congratulations on a successful term of learning and growing. We hope all students and families stay safe and have a restful break over the holidays preparing themselves for another wonderful term of learning. We encourage all students to take some time to read some books and play some math's games during the break.
Literacy
During Literacy in Term 1, students have worked on building their ability to analyse and critique a range of persuasive texts. Students have explored the themes of these texts and have explained how compares to identify the plot in a text. Students have furthered their understanding of finding the main idea of a text by looking at non fiction texts. Students are finishing the term by exploring question types and using the QAR (question answer relationship) process to understand the types of questions they are given and how to find the answers for each type.
During Writing, Students have followed the writing process of plan, drafted, compose, revise, edit and publish to create persuasive letters. We furthered their knowledge of persuasive text types with asking students to create their own advertisement and marketing campaign. Students worked towards discovering why and how advertisements are made, who they are targeted at, how their slogans are created and what language techniques advertisers use to sell a product. They were able to use these skills to plan, create a script and record an advertisement for a product.
Numeracy
In Numeracy this Term, Grade 6 students began building upon their place value knowledge. Students used this knowledge and a variety of place value strategies to understand powers of 10. Students began to explore the concept of addition using a variety of strategies including number lines and vertical algorithms with 5 digits. Students have begun to explore the concept of perimeter and area which applies the students knowledge or addition and multiplication.
Inquiry
During Inquiry in Semester 1, students explored the difference between needs and wants while identifying influences on consumer choices. They have considered strategies that can be used to help make informed personal consumer and financial choices. Students are beginning to use their new knowledge to plan a market stall towards the end of next term!
Social and Emotional Learning
Students have been building upon their courage to apologise when making mistakes. Students have had rich conversations about choices they can make and how it can impact those around them by stopping and thinking before speaking so that they can use good manners. Students have been investigating the importance of having a growth mindset in and out of the classroom and have explored concept of positive and negative self-talk.
Harmony Day
On the 21st of March the school recognised Harmony Day. Students participated in a variety of activities to discuss and think about the importance of celebrating everyone's cultures. Thank you to all students who made an effort dressing up in their traditional culture's costumes.
