Term One Wrap!

Welcome to a new segment in The Herald that gives the opportunity for a student from our SLC to share reflections on the term that has been.

This Term One Wrap of SLC responsibilities and activities is written by Mitchelle Cheptoo.

We commenced our term with lots of preparations for both the swimming and athletics carnivals. New to our roles, we had to plan how we were going to make ourselves part of the events and how we would each approach our roles.

We had our SLC coaching trip on the same day as the swimming carnival which made organising the events even trickier. The initial plan was to leave immediately after the swimming carnival and head to Turners Beach but we ended up leaving a few hours later, which we did not mind. We had Mr Black and Mrs de Bruyn with us and were going to meet Mrs Lovelock at our destination. We then went to Maccas for a snack, which was great!

Two hours after we got to Turners Beach, we were exhausted with no interest in making dinner – until we heard it was Mexican and we got our energy back. Who doesn’t love food!

We stayed in Turners Beach for three nights and four days. As a team, we had four sessions with our mentors; Mr Adrian Bosker, Mr Stuart Kent and a lovely lady, Megan Smith. We really enjoyed our time there and after going in as strangers and not knowing each other well, we came back as a team – united and ready to help each other and build each other up.

Our next event was the athletics carnival where everyone had to be in school by 6am so that Mr Bosker would take us to St. Leonard's to help set up the carnival. We then got free drinks as compensation and we all loved it!

We then had camp week and the SLC was able to have a well-deserved break, only taking photos during the two days we were at school before going to Melbourne and Sydney.

With the last five weeks of school, we did not have many activities to plan for apart from an Easter Scavenger Hunt. This took place in the last week of the term, with both the Primary and Secondary School taking part on different days. The Primary School scavenger hunt took place first, on Thursday the 10th of April during lunch break.

Students gathered at the quad waiting for instructions and rules for the hunt, excitedly anticipating the awards upon finishing the hunt. Once the rules had been explained, students in Years 3-6 ran in all directions looking for the various items on their lists. SLC members in Years 6-12 were hiding in different spots with stickers to hand to the children for finding them. Each group of students had a list of 10 different shapes and Easter-themed images which they had to find. As each group completed the scavenger hunt, they were awarded easter eggs as a treat for participating, filling the students with excitement and joy. The students participating in the scavenger hunt inspired us by demonstrating the amazing teamwork and love of which everyone is capable. Day done, we, the SLC, had to prepare ourselves for the Secondary School scavenger hunt the following day.

The last day of term was free dress day and the Secondary scavenger hunt – what a way to end the term! The day ran as usual until lunchtime, when all the interested Secondary students went to the gymnasium to receive instructions and make teams. Unlike with the Primary School, students were not only competing for participation, but to win. Only the first, second and third teams to finish were awarded chocolate! The groups were released to find clues and decipher riddles, locating the SLC members to be given parts of a Bible verse. With only one hour of class time to go, we were all done with our 1st term of 2025!

As we wrap up, I would like to leave everyone with a Bible verse from Romans 6:8-9 which says:

“Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again.”
