ONE ACT PLAY FESTIVALS

One Act Play Festival Team Hard at Work

Since the start of Term 1, the One Act Play Festival team has been steadily working every Tuesday after school, devising an original piece while also rehearsing an established work. But their efforts go far beyond simply turning up each week—over the holidays, these dedicated students completed homework exploring naturalism and realism in theatre, deepening their understanding of performance styles. They have approached every rehearsal with a level of discipline and creativity that would put many adult performers to shame. In fact, the challenge has not been coming up with ideas but deciding which ones to set aside!

This year, the team will present Ward 17, an original one-act play that they have devised with the assistance of Mr Jennings, which follows the lives of teenagers in a hospital ward. Through moments of humor, heartache, and resilience, the play explores friendship, loss, and the bonds formed in challenging circumstances. Alongside this, they will also perform The 10 Best/Worst Things About High Schoolby M.G. Davidson, a dynamic and relatable piece that captures the highs and lows of the high school experience.

As they prepare for their performances, these students are also balancing a demanding schedule, with many involved in VCE Drama and Theatre Studies, the school production, the AEP program, and external productions—all while keeping up with their schoolwork.

In Term 3, the team will take the stage at two of the Victorian Drama League’s One Act Play Festivals, competing alongside theatre groups from across the state. They will also perform at the Dandenong Ranges One Act Play Festival and the Foster One Act Play Festival before finishing with a special performance at school for family and friends. Until then, it is time for more rehearsing and refining of their work.
