WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT LHS

Melbourne
Holocaust Museum
March 11
Our Year 10 Humanities classes visited the Melbourne Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick to explore its remarkable collection of eyewitness testimonies, historical documents, and Holocaust artefacts.
A special moment during the visit was hearing the story of Abram Goldberg, a 100-year-old Holocaust survivor. Abram lived in the Lodz Ghetto and had to work hard before being taken to Auschwitz. Despite many challenges, he survived in different concentration camps. His strength and message of hope really inspired our students.

Lilydale Lakeside Children's Centre Visit
A group of students from Ms Kift's Year 9 Community Time Health and Wellbeing Team class visited Lilydale Lakeside Children's Centre to help promote health and wellbeing for kids through fun activities they created.
On March 18, the activities included "Keep it Up" and making nature bracelets, which were a hit with both the kids and adults!
On April 1, they organized a nature hunt, a compliment circle, and a drawing of someone you love!

Thriving in the Community
March 20
Some of our Junior and Middle School leaders attended the Yarra Ranges Youth Summit to learn about local council. They also had the opportunity to contribute to the council agenda.
This experience empowered our school leaders to understand the importance of civic engagement and inspired them to take an active role in shaping the local community's future!
Year 7 Art
7L Colour and Shape
The visual impact of the students' artworks is stunning! The dynamic colour combinations were tested then rendered carefully to achieve the most effective result.

Community Sport
March 25
Our Community Sport students planned and delivered small sporting activities for two Year 8 classes to participate in.
During this peer teaching time, the Year 9s were challenged with having to work in teams, communicate appropriately so their audience could understand them and allocating job roles to each member of their team, so their activity ran smoothly.
It was a great success, and we look forward to seeing the Year 9 students demonstrate their skills on a visit to a local primary school next term.

VET Acting Screen
March 26
Our first-year VET Acting Screen students had an absolute blast in an Action Acting Workshop with stunt actor Richard Williams!
They threw themselves (safely!) into choreographed action scenes, learning epic stunts, nailing camera angles, and tackling risk assessments like pros. From fight sequences to high-energy movements, the students embraced the adrenaline and brought their scenes to life.
We can’t wait to see them put these moves into action in their future film projects!

Year 9 LHS Cafe
March 27
The Year 9 Community Time Café class held another fun lunch event and received positive feedback for their delicious apple pies with custard, Caramilk slice, sausage rolls, meat pies, spiders, and hot drinks that everyone enjoyed.

Lights Camera Action
March 27
Congratulations to the Year 9 Art Enrichment Program students on their outstanding performance of 'Stacy Creek's Party' for the Year 8 students.
They took full ownership of every aspect of the production—acting, directing, costumes, makeup, set design, and props—showcasing incredible creativity and dedication.
Their hard work truly paid off, and they should be extremely proud of their achievements.

Year 11 Chemistry
HPLC and Caffeine Analysis
Our Year 11 Chemistry students recently had the exciting opportunity to visit Yarra Ranges Tech School, where they participated in a hands-on laboratory experience using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
This excursion provided students with valuable insight into how scientists separate and identify components of a mixture, specifically focusing on the analysis of caffeine in various coffee and tea products.
Throughout the day, students worked in a state-of-the-art laboratory, learning the principles of chromatography and its applications in real-world chemistry. They began by preparing standards and samples, ensuring accuracy in their analysis. After carefully setting up the HPLC system, students ran their samples through the instrument, observing how different compounds interacted with the mobile and stationary phases to achieve separation.
This experience not only deepened their understanding of analytical chemistry but also reinforced key concepts related to quantitative analysis and chemical separation techniques. The hands-on approach allowed students to engage with advanced scientific equipment, fostering their enthusiasm for chemistry.
By the end of the day, students left inspired, having gained practical skills and an appreciation for the real-world applications of chemistry in fields such as pharmaceuticals, food science, and environmental analysis.
Overall, the excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a professional laboratory setting, and their enthusiasm throughout the day highlighted their passion for science.

Thrive Wellbeing Sessions
March 31 and April 2
This week, students in Years 9 to 12 came together to engage in health and well-being activity sessions during their Thrive period.
Activities included trivia, flashback flicks, relaxation stations (mindfulness activities - board games, colouring, beads for friendship bracelet making), sports, snack stations, gardening, and drama games.
Overall, the Thrive period successfully promoted health, well-being, and strengthened friendships among students!
