Shortt Story

The Shortt Story Showdown continues to serve as a reminder that our school is absolutely brimming with creative talent. The first challenge for 2025 was about 'getting lost', specifically, lost in a supermarket. Students had to take this humble premise and build it into a gripping, emotionally charged short story - and if they lived this experience, as distressing as it may have been at the time, at least it became a source of writing inspiration!

In total, we had over 80 competitors across Years 4, 5 and 6, making for several very cramped workshops!

As with all terms, the quality of entries across the entire comp was genuinely outstanding. Every piece showed effort, thought, and a willingness to take some creative risks - and while it makes judging incredibly difficult, that’s the best kind of problem to have.

As always, judging could hardly be a solo effort - as weIl as pleading for support to our trusted teachers via an online voting system, I also used my own family dinners as a secret focus group "So Mum, tell me, which one really moved you the most?" ... 'Dad? Which one leapt off the page from the first line?".

Ultimately, the winners were decided, and they were each incredibly deserving of the $20 Dillons Bookshop voucher, and the $10 Kmart voucher. Congratulations to Hadi in Year 6, Evie S in Year 5 and Evie G in Year 4. Keep scrolling below to see their outstanding winning entries.
