Grade 6

The past two weeks have seen much learning and hard work coming from our Grade 6 students. Cross Country also saw some incredible acts of athleticism- showcasing fantastic displays of Performance. (See photos on second page)
We have began reading our next class novel ‘The Silver Donkey’. This text combines elements of both a narrative and a fable, exposing the students to hybrid texts. This book portrays powerful imagery and character emotion, allowing for rich discussion around the charming story by Sonya Hartnett. We will continue to read, discuss and expand our vocabulary from this text until the end of term one. (Two more weeks)
Alongside our novel study, we have begun investigating the genre of writing a fable.
The students have been exposed to well known fables such as ‘The boy who cried wolf’ and ‘The tortoise and the hare’. The morals and the lessons the character learns has been identified, and students have begun planning for a moral they wish to weave into their own writing, as well as planning the characters and the setting for their fable.
Our mathematical journey has focused on building a deeper understanding of area (week 7) and time (weeks 8 & 9). Students have been applying their knowledge to calculate the area and perimeter of houses they designed and were challenged with problems such as: all rooms must have the same area, but different perimeter. It was incredibly rewarding to see students rise to this challenge with a sense of Daring. Additionally, we have begun looking at elapsed time and calculating the duration of events based on start or finish times. Students have also begun to explore creating daily timetables- a much needed, real-life skill they will use in their high-school journey.
In Integrated, we have continued to investigate Australia history, including Federation, key figures in the lead up to Federation, the impact on Indigenous Australians, events leading to this monumental event including the Eureka Stockade and the Tenterfield Oration. Students are displaying a deep sense of curiosity and keen to learn more about our nation's history.
As always, we are incredibly proud of the effort and dedication the students have been showing in their learning. We look forward to another exciting fortnight ahead!
Unfortunately, our ‘Project RockIt’ was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, however, we look forward to rescheduling this for next term and allow students to learn some valuable skills and knowledge regarding bullying and developing a sense of empathy for others.
As usual, the grade six teachers are incredibly proud of the students' hard work and the friendly and cooperative classrooms that they create. we are privileged to work in.
