Grade 2
Hello families of Grade 2,
The Grade 2 students have made incredible progress as we approach the final weeks of the term. They are continuing to learn new skills as well as mastering key concepts across each subject.
In Writing, we have begun learning about procedural texts and how to structure them. Before delving into this, we had our Grade 2 classes engage in procedural experiences such as ‘How to make Fairy Bread’ and ‘How to make Oobleck’. Participating in these activities allowed us to break down the procedures into smaller chunks for students to write about.
In Maths, the Grade 2’s have begun using their knowledge of partitioning to add two-digit numbers together. They used base-10 blocks to help them find the answer to the 2-digit addition and subtraction problems. Students also began identifying halves, quarters and eighths in various shapes and lengths, splitting each of them in equal parts whilst using fraction names.
InitialLit
The IntialLit program’s spelling focus has been focusing on the digraph for the /e/ and /igh/ sounds. After consolidating their knowledge in Storybook with ‘Pete the Sheep’, the Grade 2’s began predicting, questioning as well as word work after reading ‘The Lost Girl’. In comprehension, students were introduced to persuasive texts, exploring their features and understanding how to read the text using comprehension strategies.
Integrated
In Integrated, we have continued to explore Melbourne’s history through researching significant places such as Flinders Street Station, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne Gaol and the Shrine of Remembrance. Students were able to identify and record important information about these places.
What an exciting yet productive fortnight!
Kind Regards,
The Year 2 Team
