Grade 1

Literacy
Over the past two weeks, Grade 1 students have been building upon their existing knowledge of phonemes, vowels, consonants, digraphs, helping them recognise these elements within words and super sentences. Students have had several lessons learning how to read compound words by breaking them into two smaller words. They have also participated in several explicit and independent lessons focussing on identifying nouns and syllables. Additionally, students have expanded their tricky word vocabulary by learning and practising words such as ‘some’, ‘where’, ‘should’, ‘would’ and ‘could’.
Maths
Grade 1 students have been busy strengthening their place value skills in exciting and engaging ways over the past fortnight! They have loved using iPads to explore interactive number lines and MAB block apps to compare two-digit numbers up to 100. As well as this, through hands-on games, place value charts and manipulatives, they have continued working on identifying the tens and ones in numbers and have represented numbers in expanded form. As they explored expanded form, students also began making connections to addition and subtraction.
It has been fantastic to see their confidence strengthen as they tackle larger numbers and embrace new mathematical challenges with enthusiasm!
Storybook and Writing
This week in Storybook, we have read the story of “The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch” and delved into the meaning of the words: devoured, scrumptious and ingenious. The story tells of a man who looks after a lighthouse, and everyday his wife sends his lunch on a wire that runs from the house all the way to the lighthouse. But one day, the pesky seagulls catch on to the lunch in the basket and start eating it before it can reach the lighthouse. Mr and Mrs Grinling have to devise a plan to stop the seagulls. Be sure to ask your child what happens next in the story and what their ingenious plan would be to stop the seagulls! Based on this book, students have been learning about what a solution is in a story and continuing to work on creating Super Sentences by making sure to include a capital letter at the beginning and full stop at the end.
