Harmony at Hampshire

This week Hampshire House was awash in the colour orange, as our children celebrated Harmony Week together. This special week is an important opportunity for our children to embrace diversity, learn about inclusion, and understand that everyone belongs - values that are integral to our Kambala school community.

Harmony Day is a time when we can celebrate the richness of Australia’s diverse cultures; it is also about creating an environment where every child feels accepted, valued, and proud of who they are. By starting these conversations at a young age, we are fostering empathy, respect, and a sense of belonging that will last a lifetime.

Throughout the week the children engaged in a range of activities that highlighted that no matter where we come from, we all have something special to share. The children were invited to bring in special items that represented their family heritage so they could share these with their friends, which all contributes to the strength of our Hampshire community.

Our younger children in Nursery and Toddlers embraced Harmony Day through hands-on discovery that allowed them to explore the themes of friendship, unity, and belonging. These included collaborative art projects, community gardening and storytelling. Our older Preschool children created a “friendship chain”, made friendship bracelets and explored the diversity of Australia.

Harmony Day is not just about acknowledging our differences—it is also about celebrating what makes us the same. By participating in activities like these, our children are learning that inclusivity and respect are foundational to building a harmonious community. They are beginning to understand that “everyone belongs” in our country, and that being kind, open-minded, and understanding makes the world a better place.

Thank you to our parents who helped us share the children’s cultural heritage with one another. Together, we are helping our children grow up in a world where kindness, inclusivity, and respect are valued. We look forward to continuing these important conversations with your little ones throughout the year.
