Music,Dance & Drama with Mrs Huf

Shrek the Musical is coming September 5th 2025!

Drum roll please!....

Cavendish Primary School is doing Shrek the Musical JR!

Get ready families because the CPS students are hitting the stage at Monivae College's Performing Arts Centre in September later this year to bring you Shrek the Musical JR. This hour long musical will have you smiling, laughing and grooving along as our students embark on a musical journey full of drama, dance and music!

Over the holidays is the perfect time to prep for auditions because they're happening first day back! How can you help your student prepare? Talk about the story with them, watch the movie over the holidays, listen to the songs and learn some lines!

We will have closed auditions on the first day of Term 2, which means students will audition in front of a teacher panel by themselves so no need to feel nervous in front of their peers! We're excited to cast the show and see everyone shine.

Harmony Day

Performing Arts is a fantastic way to learn about and experience different cultures. On Harmony Day, students embarked on a musical art activity, listening to a song from four different countries around the globe. They drew lines in white pastel and then went over the top in a dye wash, to reflect visually how the music made them feel. They then had a guess at which country the music came from.

After revealing the origins, students learnt a short traditional dance to accompany each track. We experienced an Irish Jig, Balinese traditional dance from Indonesia, Indigenous Australian movement story telling and Greek folk line dance to 'Zorba the Greek'.

The results are reflected at the entry to the school.

Song writing Workshop with Soulty aka Maggie Hartley

The Year 4 & 6 students were fortunate enough to have a visit from Maggie Hartley who is a local singer/songwriter/musician performing under the stage name, Soulty.

Maggie shared her background in music and how she writes songs. She then shared an original song with the students who learnt the chords on ukulele to play along with her. Students learnt the chords, lyrics and then also added the percussion instruments to create a new arrangement to a Soulty's original track titled, 'Beach Life.'

This linked in to the Magic Beach song/soundscape group projects students had started a couple of weeks prior. Maggie demonstrated how to put a melody to lyrics using student generated lyrics and ideas from their projects.

Thanks Soulty for coming in and working with us!

Lot's of exciting things happening in the music room! Stay tuned and have a great holiday!
