Years 4 & 6

Mrs Steele has been setting up some open ended problem solving activities where the students have to talk about maths and apply their skills and knowledge.

One activity was that shown below:

Each team was given a set of cards to put in time order in a circle. Students had to read the time on each card and interpret it. There was not a lot of teacher prompting - they had to think about what they already knew and apply it to place the cards in order. They then had to justify their placement. We had lots of great discussion about AM and PM, and the use of 24-hour times. We also talked about how you record 12- and 24-hour time so this information could be used to justify their answers.

In educating our students in Mathematics, it is so important that we explicitly teach the skills, but we also provide opportunities for skill application. A task such as this provides that opportunity.

In Literacy we have continued reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. We have had some in depth discussions about the role of robotics and AI in our everyday lives.

Have the discussion with your child – what is your opinion? Do you think robotics and AI will have a positive or negative impact on our futures?
