PREP

The Prep students have had a fantastic start to Term Two! It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and growing confidence as they settle back into classroom routines and embrace new learning experiences.

In Maths, we’ve been focusing on developing our counting skills, working with numbers in fun and engaging ways. The children have also been exploring measurement, with a particular focus on comparing, ordering and measuring the length of objects. Using hands-on materials such as blocks and informal units like paperclips, students have enjoyed investigating and discussing which items are longer, shorter or the same length. These activities are helping to build important mathematical language and reasoning skills.

During our Literacy sessions, we’ve continued to strengthen our letter and sound knowledge, which is essential for developing both reading and writing skills.

The students have been working hard to recognise and blend sounds to read simple words, and they’ve been using sound boxes to help segment and spell words during writing tasks.

This strategy supports students in identifying the individual sounds in words and placing them in the correct order—a key step in early literacy development.

It’s been a busy and exciting start to the term, and we’re looking forward to seeing even more growth and confidence as the weeks progress!

Year 2

We are very excited to welcome all Year 2 students back to Brookside College! We’re happy to hear that everyone had a wonderful holiday.

We have started the term with busy and fun learning activities, and below are the main topics we will be covering from Week 1 to Week 5.

Reading:

Year 2 students will continue learning about different phonics sounds. They will use their phonics skills to segment and blend words, and to identify the features of different sounds. In addition, they will focus on understanding the key elements of informative texts. Students will learn to identify features such as headings, subheadings and diagrams.

Writing:

Students will concentrate on the structure and features of informative texts. They will use their understanding and creativity to develop interesting headings for topics they are passionate about. They will also learn how to effectively take notes in point form (main ideas), and then transform these notes into complete sentences.

Mathematics

In Maths, Year 2 students will begin learning about fractions and 2D shapes. They will explore fractions by creating halves, quarters, and eighths using paper folding. Additionally, they will learn to draw various 2D shapes and describe their features using spatial mathematical terms.

Science:In Science, students will explore the characteristics of different materials in our environment. They will learn the names of various materials and understand the reasons behind choosing specific materials for different purposes.
