Year 8 Geography Excursion to Mordialloc Beach to Learn About Coastal Environments
On 22nd November, all Year 8 students undertook a fieldtrip to Mordialloc to connect their studies about Coastal Environments to the real world. Students were resilient in the heat and wind to learn about coastal processes and the impact of humans on the beach environment. Maxim, a Year 8A student reflects on his experience below:
Today, we visited Mordialloc Beach. We first left school and took the train to Mordialloc Station where we were greeted with a variety of activities. We split into groups and rotated through different tasks. My group started by observing natural processes, such as the wind, temperature, and waves, among other things. Next, we sketched the beach, adding detailed features to our drawings.
After sketching, we moved on to interviewing people at the beach. We asked them questions about which beach they usually visit, why they chose to come to the beach and how often they go. Following the interviews, we examined the impacts of human activity on the beach, both positive and negative. We also measured rubbish density in a 1m x 1m square area.
Once we completed the activities, we had a snack in the shade before boarding the train to go back to GEC. Back in class, we summarized our findings and reflected on everything we observed during the trip.
