Aberfoyle Park High School Captains shine at YLead Conference

During the school holidays, our 2025 school captains Hannah, Alex, Matilda and Lacey attended the Australian Student Leadership Conference, known as YLead.

This three-day, two-night camp was a fantastic opportunity for them to forge new connections and enhance their leadership skills. Our captains formed close bonds with students from Kangaroo Island Community Education, Charles Campbell College and Gleeson College.

From the outset, our mentors made us feel at ease with a classic YLead song and dance to "When Love Takes Over." The first evening featured a Retro Night, where everyone dressed up and danced to vintage hits like "Footloose" and "Funky Town."

On the second day, a formal night allowed us to express sincere gratitude to those we met during our stay. A highlight for our captains was writing gratitude notes, which uplifted both the writers and recipients.

The final day was dedicated to reflecting on the camp experience and planning how to implement positive changes at Aberfoyle Park High School. Our captains proposed a mentor program to support students transitioning into and through senior school.

Overall, the camp was a resounding success, equipping our captains with confidence and leadership skills to enrich the 2025 school year.

Senior Leader Student Pathways and Careers Introduction

I am excited to introduce myself as the new Senior Leader - Student Pathways and Careers at Aberfoyle Park High School. In this role, I will be focusing on the South Australian Department for Education’s Flexible Industry Programs incorporating VET, and leading Career Development and Career Education across years 7–12.

I am deeply passionate about Career Education and the importance of developing agency and empowering students to make informed choices about their future. My approach is guided by the Australian Blueprint for Career Development, which emphasises lifelong learning and growth. Career development is a journey that starts early, with age-appropriate progression along the way:

  • Years 7 & 8 – Exploring self-awareness, passions, interests, and skills
  • Year 9 – Investigating career options and pathways
  • Year 10 – Connecting self to options and developing plans
  • Years 11 & 12 – Refining goals and taking action to transition beyond school

With extensive experience in senior school leadership—including roles as a year level leader, SACE Leader, and in career development and VET programs—I am committed to helping students connect their learning to real-world opportunities.

As a qualified Career Counsellor and a lead practitioner with the SACE Board, I look forward to working closely with students, families, and staff to ensure every student has value and purpose in their education working towards a clear, supported pathway beyond school.

I am eager to collaborate with the school community and welcome any conversations about how we can support students in achieving their aspirations and their own version of success.
