We are very excited to announce that Wheelers Hill is offiically a Five Star Resourcesmart school. Of the 2,747 schools in Victoria there are only 17 schools who have 5 star status. This is a huge achievement and one we are very proud of.
On Thursday 6th March we will be having a whole school celebration in honour of this. More details to come via Compass. We will be asking all students to wear green on this day.
Our Water tanks were finally plumbed over the holidays which should result in a huge reduction in our water bill. Our next step, solar panels!
A reminder of the five bin system in operation in our school. Each classroom has 5 bins:
Landfill
Our landfill goes into the big skip bin and is collected from each classroom once per week. This is a paid service.
Soft plastics
These are collected once per week and are currently taken to the Monash Recycling Centre. Currently myself, Pete from OSHC and Emma and Nathan Xie's parents are on the roster to drop this down at the Recycling Centre. If anyone else would like to help us with this job please contact Ms Richards.
Recycling
Once per week we collect the recycling from the classrooms. This is placed in the yellow wheelie bins and collected by the Monash Council.
Paper
We collect paper twice per week and have blue wheelie bins that are collected by a company called Betterwaste each fortnight. This is a paid service.
Compost
Twice a week our Waste Warriors bring the compost bins up to either the green wheelie bins (that the council have supplied and we put out each week) or we place them in our compost tubs of which we have four placed around the school.
This week we have begun our daily Nude Food system. A huge thank you to our parent community who have embraced this initiative and supported us. The sustainability team will regularly publish tips to help out with ideas for nude food lunchboxes. (As well as having a positive impact from a sustainability perspective there are also financial and health benefits too!)
Wheelers Hill Primary School is strongly committed to building important relationships between school and home. An integral part of many of our programs is parental assistance. Classroom teachers value the help of parents to enable them to provide high quality teaching and learning programs.
Maddy Gallagher will be hosting a parent information session focussing on how we teach reading and writing (Multisensory Structured Language) at our school and how to be parent helper in the classroom on Thursday 20th February at 9am in the OSHC Room.
This session will give an insight into the types of activities that are part of our MSL approach. It will also include some hands-on activities. This session is aimed at Prep parents, but some Year 1 and 2 parents might like to attend too. Please note this is the same session that we ran in Term 2 2024 and you do not need to attend this session to be a parent helper in the classroom.
I will also run through the expectations of being a parent helper, the types of activities you might be required to help with, confidentiality and compliance.
During the session, we will cover topics such as:
Please note this session is not compulsory, just something we find a lot of parents are interested in when their child first starts school.
If you are interested in attending, please fill in this Microsoft Forms. I will then create a list so you can tick your name off when you arrive at the session.
The session will begin promptly at 9:05 and will run until 10:30am. There will be time for questions at the end.
Classroom helpers will begin in Week 5 - please contact your child's teacher if you are interested in helping out. If you have any questions regarding Classroom helpers - please contact me via email or speak to your child's class teacher.
