Attendance

Attendance Fact Sheet
What parents need to know
Compulsory schooling:
In Victoria, schooling is compulsory for everyone aged 6 to 17 unless an exemption has been granted.
High impact of absenteeism:
Missing just one day a fortnight is the equivalent of missing four weeks of school in a year, which can add up to 1.5 years of missed schooling by the time a student finishes Year 12.
Chronic absenteeism:
One in 10 students nationwide are considered chronically absent, missing 18 or more days per year.
Communication is key:
Parents should inform the school about any absences and concerns, as schools are partners in supporting their child's attendance.
What to do if you have concerns
Talk to the school:
Reach out to the school to discuss any worries or issues affecting your child's attendance.
Provide documentation:
If a child is absent for a specific reason, such as a medical appointment, provide the school with a medical certificate if required.
Work together on a plan:
Schools can work with parents to develop a support plan if attendance becomes an issue. We are here to help and it's better if we work together!
