English

Our Grade 5 and 6 students have been diving deep into the world of reading and writing, exploring how authors build meaning through language and structure. Over the past two weeks, students have focused on developing their literal comprehension skills, learning to locate and recall key information directly from a text. Through shared and guided reading sessions, they have also begun reading this terms class text titled: Kensuke's Kingdom.

In writing, students have been studying narrative text structure — understanding how orientation, complication, and resolution work together to capture a reader’s attention. They’ve analysed how authors introduce characters, build tension, and bring stories to satisfying conclusions, before applying these techniques in their own creative writing.

Grammar lessons have centred on building stronger, more interesting sentences. Students began by revising simple sentences, then focused on how compound sentences use conjunctions to join ideas smoothly. They’ve now progressed to complex sentences, discovering how clauses can add detail, depth, and sophistication to their writing.

This combination of comprehension and sentence construction has strengthened students’ ability to both understand and create effective texts.

Mathematics

In mathematics students have been building their confidence by exploring a range of important concepts and strategies. One key focus has been on using efficient strategies for multiplying large numbers. Students have practised breaking down complex problems using a variety of methods including vertical algorithms, which is helping them understand not just how to calculate, but why these strategies work.

Students have also enjoyed applying their mathematical thinking to coordinates and mapping. Through hands-on tasks, they’ve learned how to locate and plot points using ordered pairs, read grid references, and interpret maps with increasing accuracy. This learning links beautifully to real-world applications in geography and navigation.

Another area of focus has been positioning and ordering integers on a number line. Students explored positive and negative numbers, comparing their values and understanding how they relate to everyday contexts such as temperature, elevation, and financial balance.

Throughout these topics, students have been encouraged to explain their reasoning, use precise mathematical language, and check the accuracy of their solutions. It’s been wonderful to see their growing ability to approach challenging problems with confidence and persistence!

Geography

In Geography this term, our students have been exploring the rich diversity of people and places across Asia, focusing on Thailand, Nepal and Indonesia. Students were fascinated to learn about the unique cultures, traditions, and environments that shape the daily lives of people in these regions. Through reading, discussion, and research, they compared lifestyles and discovered how geography influences how people live, work, and connect with their surroundings.

A key focus of this unit has been understanding the importance of rice to many Asian economies and communities. Students investigated how rice is grown, harvested, and traded, and how it plays a vital role in food security, employment, and cultural identity across the region.

To deepen their geographical understanding, students used a range of geographical tools, including maps, statistics and visual representations, to record and present information. They also examined the geographical concepts of place, space, environment, and interconnection, learning how people are linked to their environments and to one another through trade, culture, and shared global challenges.

This unit has sparked a strong sense of curiosity and appreciation for the wider world, with many students eager to continue exploring the fascinating countries and cultures that make up our global community.
