Room 8 Learning Highlights

Maths: Games and Shapes!
In Room 8 we have been having a blast in Maths. We started off the term learning some new maths games that are easy to understand and fun to play! The class favourite is called 1, 2, 3, 4 Win Them All. It is a simple card game you play in pairs and the aim is to collect all the cards.
We find many of our maths games from www.lovemaths.me/games , a fantastic website with hundreds of different maths games with tutorials on how to play!
We have also been looking at different 2-dimensional shapes, exploring shapes with a number of different sides and learning the difference between regular and irregular shapes. Did you know a shape with 9 sides is called a nonagon? To showcase our learning, we have created poster-drawings that only use 2-dimensional shapes - we think they came out pretty cool!
English: Reading Comprehension and Information Texts
Every day in Room 8 we do paired reading to help our fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Each week we read a new text. This term we have covered a range of different topics such as: Pushing and Pulling Forces, Bees, and The Melbourne Cup! At the end of each week, we complete comprehension questions about each text to embed our learning.
We have all finished creating and presenting our Information Reports on Australian animals. We had a lot of fun researching and finding out about a range of different animals. Some of us thought it a bit scary standing up in front of the class to present, but we all found the courage and managed to do it very successfully!
Science and HASS
In science we have been learning all about forces like pushing and pulling. We did a science experiment where we had to create different ways to move a marble which was a lot of fun! We have also been looking at sounds. Did you know that every sound we hear is a vibration that our eardrums perceive? Room 8’s favourite activity thus far has been when we got to go outside to sit and listen to sounds that we could hear. We heard birds, airvents, cars, and many more things!
In HASS, we are looking at Indigenous Studies and how important country is to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We have explored this through dreamtime stories and watching informative videos of Aboriginal Elders from all around Australia. We have also learned some Kaurna words to describe the land and living things around us.
