OPEN CLASSROOMS

“Magnify Magic”

It was great to see so many parents and guardians visit our classes for the Magnify demonstrations of InitiaLit lessons, this week. We hope you gained a good insight into the program and its structure and how it is taught.

Magnify Around the Classrooms

Term 3 Week 6

#magnifysandhurst

It has been a busy fortnight in the P-2 area with lots of wonderful learning happening.

Foundation

The Preps have been learning about the /oo/ (as in moon) sound. They are learning some new tricky words such as what and where and revising previously learnt words such as little and of. They have also been recalling words with the digraphs /wh/ and /th/.

Gr 1

Grade Ones are enjoying the story, “A Library Book for Bear,” where they have been introduced to some new vocabulary: dreadful, delightful and command. I wonder if they can tell you what these words mean?

Grade One children are also learning about the ‘bossy e’ spelling pattern (split digraph spelling choice) and are practicing spelling words that use this spelling pattern, such as cake, ute and Pete.

Gr 2

Grade Twos have begun revising the content they have covered this year in spelling. They have focused on contractions, and various spelling patterns. They are learning the tricky words ‘woman’ and ‘women’ this week. In reading, they have been learning how to Find the Main Idea in a text and then use the main ideas in text paragraphs to write a text summary.

Grade Twos have loved their storybook, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.” This story is told from the perspective of the Wolf, who claims the whole ‘blowing down the houses’ saga was a complete misunderstanding, and can all be blamed on the need to borrow a cup of sugar. The children have compared this version of the story to the traditional tale by using a Venn Diagram and have discussed whether or not they have a little sympathy for the wolf. (Spoiler: most children thought the Wolf got what he deserved!)

Foundation

Following the OCHRE program for Mathematics, Grade Prep children have been looking at Data, collecting data and answering yes/no questions about data. They are learning how to represent data in different ways.

Gr 1

In Maths, Grade Ones have been focusing on sharing and grouping, working with concrete materials to practice and demonstrate their understanding.

Gr 2

In Maths, Grade Two children have been learning about Shape. They have learnt how to identify regular and irregular polygons, know what vertices and sides of a shape are, can name several polygons and have begun identifying 2D shapes (faces) in 3D shapes. They have also learnt about parallel lines and have practiced identifying these.

Gr 3 and 4

Literacy

Gr 3-4s are currently reading the classic 'Charlotte's Web' by E.B. White.

We have revised the prefixes re- , dis- , 'pre-  and how they change the base word. We have also revised suffixes and when to use the silent 'e' on the end of a word.

Our vocabulary is taken from the novel 'Charlotte's Web'. We have learned what the following words mean: meek, examine, innocently, rigid, ramble, frolic, neglect, sedentary, morsel, gullible and affectionately.

We have continued work on the conjunctions 'because', 'but' and 'so' and when you would use each one.

Spelling is focused on words containing the /er/ phoneme and the different ways you can represent that sound eg skirt, refer, urgent and heard.

We are reviewing sentence types (statement, exclamation, question, command), dependent/independent clauses and simple/compound/complex sentences. Students have also been introduced to predicates.

Work on narrative writing continues. We have completed work on what introductions and action paragraphs should contain and the expected features.

Numeracy

We have begun our new topic 'Multiplication and Division'. We are learning to 'unpack' worded multiplication and division problems and represent them with bar models in order to solve. The remainder of this week will be focused on two digit multiplication (with and without regrouping) with materials.

Gr 5 and 6

This term, we have continued reading our novel that we started last term called “The Grandest Bookshop in the World”. This book is a fantasy novel about two siblings, Pearl and Valley, who must defeat a series of challenges to save their father and his magical bookshop. The story is set in Melbourne in the late 1800’s, and is based on the real like bookshop “Coles Book Arcade” which once was considered the grandest bookshop in the world!

In connection with this novel, the students have started planning and writing a narrative that is set in Coles Book Arcade, and includes aspects of magic and historical fiction!

During spelling, our focus will be on the root words sect/seg and pend/pense.

In Maths, we have spent the first 2 weeks of term looking at measurement! In particular, we have looked at converting between units of measurement (length & mass) and measuring length, mass and capacity.

Next week, we will be moving onto our next maths topic which is ‘data investigation’. We will be focusing on this for 3 weeks.
