Sun Safety at School

In Australia, the UV rays from the sun are very strong. The sun can still cause skin damage on cloudy or cool days. Protecting children from excessive sun exposure helps keep them safe and healthy.

At our school, we follow the SunSmart rules. During Term 1 and Term 4, all children must wear a TRPS broad-brimmed hat when they are outside. This protects their face, neck, and ears from the sun. If a child does not have a hat, they will need to stay in the shade and will not be able to play in the sun. This is our “no hat, no play” rule.

You can help your child by:

  • Making sure they bring a hat to school every day (and make sure your child’s name is written clearly inside).
  • Putting sunscreen on them before school. Children can also bring sunscreen to reapply during the day.
  • Encouraging them to play in the shade whenever possible.
  • Reminding them to drink water often, especially on hot days, to stay cool and hydrated.

These small steps make a big difference. Wearing a hat, using sunscreen, playing in the shade, and drinking water all help children enjoy the outdoors safely.
