Visual Arts News

Hello Families,
It’s been a fun and creative few weeks in the Visual Arts rooms as we’ve moved into Media Arts! Students across all year levels have been exploring how stories, ideas and emotions can be shared through pictures, photos, and film. Here’s a snapshot of what each year level has been up to:
Prep
Our Prep students have been learning about photo stories — simple stories told through pictures. They’ve practiced sequencing events in the correct order and created their own colourful picture stories to share with the class.
Grade One
Grade One students have been exploring how stories are built through characters and settings. They’ve designed their own unique characters and started planning the backgrounds and environments where their stories will take place.
Grade Two
Grade Two students have been developing their own photo story plans. They’ve brainstormed creative ideas, designed characters, and carefully thought about a beginning, middle, and ending to make sure their stories flow clearly from start to finish.
Grade Three
Grade Three students have been learning about advertisements and how they persuade an audience. They explored the key features of ads in both video and poster form — including catchy slogans, bright visuals, and emotional hooks — and are now designing their own advertisement posters for their favourite toy or product.
Grade Four
Grade Four students are exploring the art of photography and learning how different camera angles and shots can change the way a story is told. Using digital cameras, they’ve practiced taking close-up, mid-shot, and wide-shot photos and discussed how each can show different details or emotions.
Grade Five
Grade Five students have been diving deeper into the world of film. They’ve explored how camera angles, lighting, and sound can create mood and emotion in a short film. Using digital cameras, they experimented with low, high, and eye-level angles to discover how each can make a character or scene feel powerful, emotional, or dramatic.
Grade Six
Grade Six students are exploring how short films tell stories and share messages. They’ve studied how filmmakers use camera shots, angles, lighting, and sound to create different feelings or communicate meaning. Students have also been experimenting with filming techniques and discussing how these choices influence the viewer’s experience.
Our students are showing great creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills as they learn to think like photographers, filmmakers, and storytellers. We’re looking forward to seeing their final projects come together over the next few weeks!
