Grade 4 Community News

Welcome to Term 4!
Time truly flies — can you believe we’re already in Term 4? I hope all our wonderful families enjoyed a relaxing holiday break. Back at school, students have jumped straight into another exciting term of learning. As we all know, Term 4 is always the busiest time of the year, so buckle up — it’s going to be a fun and productive ride!
Reading – R2L Unit: Help Around the House
Students have begun their first Reading to Learn (R2L) unit for the term, Help Around the House, which runs from Weeks 1 to 3. In the first week, they compared Canberra to other Australian cities and discussed how the setting is represented in the book. In Week 2, students were introduced to parts of the Australian Scout Promise and laws. They made connections between Scouts Australia and the text, discussing how the characters demonstrate the values of a Scout.
This term, students are also building their reading fluency through our engaging class serial, Help Around the House. By reading aloud regularly, they are practising expression, pacing, and accuracy — key skills that help develop confident, fluent readers.
Writing – Persuasive Writing
In writing, students have continued to develop persuasive writing skills, which runs from Weeks 1 to 3. They are working on a piece where they will persuade the reader whether A Long Walk to Water is the best book—or not! In Weeks 1 and 2, students have been using Single Paragraph Outlines (SPOs) to plan and draft their main body paragraphs. They’ve been encouraged to include persuasive language features such as high-modality words, argumentative nouns, emotive language, and sequencing transition words. As this is their second persuasive writing unit, we are excited to see the growth in their confidence and the quality of their writing. We’re looking forward to some exceptional persuasive pieces!
Some writing samples, working in progress…
Maths – Data
In Maths, students have been learning how to ask questions, collect information, and make sense of data. They explored different ways to show their findings, including pictographs and column graphs that represent more than one response. Students also practised using digital tools, such as spreadsheets, to record and summarise their data.
