Grade 1 Community News

Hello Grade 1 Families,

Welcome back to another term of fun and learning. It is the final term for our Grade 1 students before they move into Grade 2 so it will be a big but exciting term. Below is the learning that our students have been doing this past fortnight that we would love to share with you.

InitiaLit

In Weeks 1 and 2, we have been learning the new tricky words; couldn'tshouldn’t and wouldn’t. We also learnt two new trigraphs which make the /air/ sound.

Here are our upcoming tricky words which you can practice at home!

For more practice, ask your child to write sentences using these words.

Maths

This week in Maths, our Grade 1 students have been having lots of fun playing games that help them practise regrouping numbers. They have learned that 10 ones make 1 ten and 10 tens make 100! Students have also been continuing their work in data and statistics, comparing different types of data and interpreting simple data displays.

Next, students will begin learning about sharing using arrays, which will help them understand the foundations of multiplication and division.

You can support this learning at home by asking your child how many hundreds, tens, and ones make up a number, or by finding real-life examples of grouping and sharing together (like sorting toys or snacks!).

Knowledge Building

This fortnight, our Grade 1 students have continued their exciting learning about fairy tales. We have explored Jack and the Beanstalk, where students retold the story using Story Champs and discussed the key events and characters. Soon, students will also have the opportunity to plant their very own beanstalks, connecting their literacy learning to a hands-on experience! This experience will support their writing of a procedural text about how to grow a beanstalk.

Students also learned about the conjunction ‘because’ and how it helps to explain why something happens. They have practised using it to write compound sentences, showing great creativity and understanding.

Next, students will begin writing their own fairy tales! You can support your child’s learning at home by reading your favourite fairy tales together and helping them to write a short summary of what happened in the story.

Storybook

We have been reading the book "Bears Don’t Read" by Emma Chichester Clark and “The Story of Ping” by Majorie Flack. Students have been practising retelling the stories in their own words to their peers, and using ideas from the texts to create their own adventure stories (you can ask them to retell it at home, too!)

Here are the new vocabulary words we have learnt from the books. It has been great to see our students use these words in their speaking and writing!

Respectful Relationships

In Respectful Relationships, students have been learning about help-seeking strategies and understanding when and how to ask for help. They have taken part in a range of games and interactive activities that encouraged them to practise these strategies and reflect on the importance of seeking help in different situations.

Story Champs

In Weeks 1 and 2, we practiced retelling "Lily’s Spilled Cereal” and "Caden's Crackers.”

We begin by identifying the characters, setting, problem, action, feeling, solution and ending feeling.

Next we buddy up and verbally retell the story while incorporating the actions and gestures. Finally, we write the story together, then students draft their copy into their books.

Challenge your child to re-tell the stories from above with matching actions!
