What's Happening in the Senior School

Year 5

What’s Happening in Year 5 in Weeks 7 & 8

Welcome to Weeks 7 & 8 and Term 4.

In Week 6, we completed our Year 5 Bike Ed program. The students were really impressive with their conduct throughout the week, a big congratulations to all of Year 5. We focused on our road skills such as left and right hand turns, driveway exits, and how to approach a roundabout. After our week of skills, all students went on a ride to St. Bedes College, which was a really nice way to implement what we learnt the week before. Thank you very much to all of the parent volunteers who were involved through the week, we could not have completed the program without you.

Students completed the Elephant Ed program, we thank all students for the maturity shown throughout this. We also have the Smoothie Bar incursion coming up this week, something the students are excited for.

Students will also continue their leadership workshops with the Year 1s and will engage with other year levels as well.

Over the next fortnight, we will be learning about...

Wellbeing

Students will learn how to recognise emotions and engage in positive self-talk through Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons.

Literacy

Students will be completing our novel titled ‘Can You See Me’ and completing the associated sentence and text level activities. We will continue the Word Origins spelling lessons. The students are enjoying finding out the meaning of new morphemes each week.

Maths

We are currently completing our Angles unit, with the students working through Weeks 6 and 7. We have now finished our unit on Time, with the students showing solid progression when we completed our post tests, well done to all. After our Angles unit is complete, we will be moving into Statistics and Probability.

Knowledge Unit

As part of our Health Knowledge Unit, students will be explaining how influential people may impact the way individuals see themselves and influence their developing identities, for example parents, friends, coaches, sporting role models and influencers. They will investigate how beliefs and cultural practices contribute to the development of positive self identities. Students will also be researching sources of health information and places where they can seek help at home, school and in the community. In Week 5 students will be exploring the Kids Helpline website. They will explore the Kids 5-12yrs page. If you would like to visit the site with your child prior to the session you can access it here: Kids 5-12 Years | How Can we Help? | Kids Helpline

Year 6

What’s Happening in Year 6 in Weeks 7 & 8

Over the past four weeks, our Year 6 students have been busy engaging in a rich and varied learning program. They have begun studying their new class novel, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, which they will explore alongside their Environmental Science unit on electricity to deepen their understanding of energy and innovation. In Literacy, students have continued their work on Word Origins, building their knowledge of etymology and how language evolves. Alongside this, they have participated in the Reach Program, developing personal awareness and interpersonal skills. As part of their Economics unit, students have been applying persuasive techniques to convince adults and peers to support their small businesses. They have also begun creating their Memory Books—a cherished Year 6 tradition—capturing highlights from their primary school journey. With the year drawing to a close, students are now enthusiastically preparing for upcoming events, including the Prep Concert, Carols, and Graduation.

Wellbeing

In the coming two weeks, our Year 6 students will be dedicating their Wellbeing sessions to reflecting on their primary school journey. Through guided discussions and personal writing tasks, students will revisit significant moments, challenges, and achievements from their time at Beaumaris Primary School. As part of this process, they will also be preparing themselves for the expectations and habits needed for a successful transition to secondary school. These reflections will be thoughtfully captured in their Memory Books, creating a meaningful keepsake that celebrates their growth and readiness for the next chapter.

Literacy

In Literacy over the next two weeks, our Year 6 students will be applying persuasive language and marketing strategies to promote their stalls for the upcoming BPS Market Day. They will design a business poster that thoughtfully incorporates the psychology of colour to complement their logo and tagline, ensuring their branding is eye-catching and effective. Students will also write their own radio advertisement and jingle, crafting persuasive scripts that convince their audience to support their business. This unit provides a rich opportunity for students to combine Literacy skills with real-world communication and entrepreneurial thinking.

Maths

Over the next two weeks in Numeracy, our Year 6 students will continue strengthening their budgeting skills as they work through real-life financial scenarios connected to their Market Day unit. They will also revisit key mathematical concepts from throughout the year during Daily Reviews, helping to reinforce and consolidate prior learning. Students will be reviewing the order of operations and applying this knowledge to solve multi-step, worded problems. These activities will support students in building confidence and readiness for the transition to secondary school.

Knowledge Unit

In the coming two weeks for our Economics Knowledge Unit, Year 6 students will be focusing on developing the marketing and advertising for their Market Day businesses. This includes refining their branding, promotional materials, and strategies to attract customers. Most students have now purchased the resource they will need to make their products; if this has not yet been done, we encourage students to finalise purchases as soon as possible. Students are also required to bring all resources for their products in a clearly labelled bag or box, ensuring they include a checklist of all items inside. Students will be starting to make their products in the following few weeks, with most of this work taking place at school, though they are welcome to complete some tasks at home if needed. All completed products will need to be at school by Wednesday 3rd December. This preparation will support a smooth and successful Market Day experience.

Homework

Students are expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, five times a week, to improve their reading skills. We encourage students to bring in their diaries every Monday to show their teacher what they have read each week.  Additionally, they will receive Mathletics tasks every fortnight to reinforce and build on their mathematical knowledge. Please check to see if there are any new tasks assigned on Mathletics.
