Year 9/10 Crime & Politics Excursion 16/10

On Thursday the 16th of October, our year 9 and 10 crime & politics students ventured into the city and entered The Magistrates’ Court of Victoria. Here they were given some wonderful exposure to the practical world of legal procedure by respectfully observing a variety of court cases.
We were kindly welcomed by a Magistrate and at her request, during a break in the proceedings, a prosecutor gave us an outline of the case so that the students could better follow and contextualise their observations in this case. Students were able to observe numerous important legal procedures and the conventions of the courtroom. Proudly, we can say our students upheld our values of curiosity and compassion by demonstrating the appropriate level of respect and sensitivity required in The Magistrates Court of Victoria.
In the afternoon, we were welcomed into the offices of the Maroondah City Council and introduced to the Mayor, Councillor Kylie Spears along with other councillors, employees from the council’s student youth services and law officers. Each of them discussed their roles and responsibilities with the students to give them a comprehensive insight into the workings of our local council.
Once again, students displayed all of our school values and joyfully participated in discussion and learning around the legal responsibilities and opportunities that our local council employs.
