Year 5 & 6

Around our level

The final two weeks of Term 3 were full of excitement as our school celebrated its 100-year anniversary! The school transformed their classrooms into vibrant displays representing different decades in our history. Up in our building, 5/6A explored the 1970s, 5/6B delved into the 1950s, and 5/6C brought the 1960s to life.

Students enjoyed researching their chosen era, learning about the music, fashion, and major events that shaped each decade. The decorations and creativity on display were absolutely amazing!

To wrap up the term, we celebrated Footy Day on the last day of school. Students came dressed in their favourite team colours and proudly joined in a whole-school parade before recess. After recess, everyone headed to the oval for a series of fun tabloid games — a perfect way to finish the term with smiles, laughter, and plenty of team spirit!

We also had our Interschool Sport Gala Day Basketball teams represent Yarra Road PS at the Division Finals on Monday. Both teams demonstrated exceptional skill and should be commended for their efforts in the round robin competition. A very big thank you to Jordan and Michelle for coaching the teams!

5/6A

Last term, on the last day, Yarra Road celebrated Footy day. This is a whole school activity. It first started with a parade. Each footy team went up and sang along to their team anthem at assembly while dressed in our footy team colours or jersey or even soccer or rugby colours. After snack, the year 5/6s went and collected our year 1 and prep buddies and went to the oval to do tabloid sports with our mateship groups. After tabloid sports it was lunch time. After lunch time it was only 30 minutes until the end of the day because it was early dismissal at 2:30pm. Overall it was a fun day.

Footy day was really fun. There were lots of fun activities that you could do. There was an assembly in the morning and everyone got to stand up and sing their footy song. There was also a dice roll where they rolled the dice to see who wins the Grand Final. We also got to do the activities on the oval with our buddies.

For the 100 years of Yarra Road, my class did the 1970s. I was wearing some flares and a blue and white shirt and some blue shades. When I was dancing I felt great. I loved the food and  the dance. I got to be in the front row for the dance on Saturday. I loved the pony ride and also the food.

- Egan H

The 100 year celebration on Friday was fun but I really liked Saturday. There was amazing food and a petting zoo. It was lots of fun. There were little baby goats and a Llama as well as so many other animals. Everyone wore amazing costumes and the dances were so good. There were so many good features of the 100 years celebrations.

5/6B

Footy Day was a very fun experience. Most people wore their team’s footy colours. I wore the St Kilda colours. First we had an assembly singing all the teams songs and dancing around. Then we went to the oval with our mateship groups and played fun games until lunch. After that we had our footy day lunch to end the day off.

Footy Day was really fun because I got to run the activities with one other person. I went as a Geelong supporter . At the start of the day we went to the gym and they played the theme song for each footy team. And then for lunch we had a footy day lunch. It was a great day!

I think that the 100 Year Celebration was amazing because there was popcorn, fairyfloss and more! I also got to perform and do my dance! When I did my dance during our song, everybody clapped!

- Aaron L

My class learned about the fifties and it was a lot of fun. We learned about diners and jukeboxes. We also made fast food containers. Our song was Born to Hand Jive from Grease. The Year Six dance was We’re All in this Together. I came along on the Saturday and performed.

5/6C

Footy day was really good. All the Year 6 students set up the activities on the oval. We set up 17 activities and it was fun setting them up and then leading our groups. We also ordered special Footy Day lunches from the canteen. Overall Footy Day was really fun and it is the last one I will experience at Yarra Road.

l loved the 100 celebrations so much  on Friday and Saturday. l loved doing the dances and dressing up  in my costume and seeing everyone dressed up as well. On Saturday,  l got so much food.  There was fairyfloss, popcorn, lollies, cupcakes, cakepops, cookies, snow cones, sausages, drinks and ice cream. There was also a petting zoo and  pony rides.

The celebrations were so cool.  I liked seeing things from a different time in the world  and all the different songs such as Hey Jude which was written in 1969 by the Beatles.

- Jackson

Footy day is one of my favourite days of the year. I love all of the fun things and activities that we do like tabloid sports and the assembly in the morning. Tabloid sports is on the oval and this year there were 17 different activities. In the morning we have an assembly where every team's anthem is played. Overall footy day was really fun!
