Around Our Level
Welcome back to everyone. We hope you had a wonderful break and are ready for a very exciting and busy Term 4.
In Literacy, this week we have been revising the short vowel sounds ('a'/'e'/'i'/'o'/'u'), as in 'a'/'apple', 'e'/'edge', 'i'/'itchy', 'o'/'octopus', and 'u'/'up'. We have been practising our segmenting and blending skills, and recognition of CVC words and heart words. The Preps have been working hard to recognise and develop their automatic recall and to write these words each day on their whiteboards. In writing, we have completed recounts about their holiday, completed a sentence strip, wrote a dictated sentence in their books, and used a picture prompt to create a short story.
This term our Preps are undertaking an ‘Author Study’ on Eric Carle and will be introduced to a variety of texts, such as the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘The very busy Spider’, ‘The Lazy Tortoise’, 'The Red Fox’, ‘Mister Seahorse’, ‘5 Little Ducks’, and ‘Slowly, slowly said the Sloth’. We will be completing sequencing activities using the prompts first, then completing craft activities related to the book, and lastly, comprehension activities.
In Maths, we have been learning about different types of patterns, such as shape patterns, colour patterns, number patterns, and repeating patterns, with 2 and 3 elements. Our students completed a number of rotations using unfix cubes, icy pole sticks, buttons, and pattern blocks to create and continue different patterns. During Applied Maths on a Wednesday, students learned about capacity and how much something can hold. We used water and food dye to compare the capacity of different shaped containers, to make predictions, and compare and record our answers. We introduced the students to the language of full, empty, half, nearly full and nearly empty.
In History, we have been learning about ‘the past’ through photos. Students have been sharing photos of important milestones and celebrations, and discussing these with their classmates.
We welcome a new family in Prep to our school. Congratulations Spencer in Prep A on the wonderful start you have made at your new school. We hope that you settle in well and enjoy getting to know your new classmates.
