Shine the Light

Visual Art
Well done to the students who submitted an artwork to be considered for the of St Mary’s Bright Sparks Exhibition at the Incinerator Gallery.
The Bright Sparks Art Exhibition will be held at the Crown Street Stables in Ascot Vale.
The opening night is Friday 14 November from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. All are welcome.
We have around twenty entries in the exhibition ranging from Foundation to Year Six.
The exhibition will run for a couple of weeks in the Gallery above the stables cafe.
Here are the St Mary's contributions:
Foundation
On Thursday afternoon we had our Foundation families in to create family trees. This is part of our history unit all about families. It was so fantastic to see students asking questions and discussing their family connections.
Year 2
Meet Our Magical Mythical Creatures!
Year 2 students imagined and designed their own spectacular mythical creatures!
We then created exciting stories that bring these wonderful characters to life.
Here are some excerpts from our imaginative writing.
Year 3
The Year 3's have been reading Jane Yolen's How Do Dinosaurs...... books. We were so excited to write and illustrate our own story which we will share with the Foundation and Year 1 students.
Year 4
Year 4 have been very busy! Students have been spending lots of time engaging in fluency passages to support their comprehension of texts. In Wellbeing, students have been exploring ways to describe themselves positively. Each student took turns writing a positive adjective on their classmates and teachers papers, spreading kindness and encouragement throughout the class.
Year 5
In Literacy, we have been learning how to write newspaper articles by using the correct structure and including a catchy headline. We wrote about a creature we created.
Lilan S
On Wednesday 29th, the Year 5s went to Altona Beach to learn about water safety. When we were at the beach we participated in a range of rotations. At each rotation we learnt something new about water safety. Some of the rotations included learning how to use life jackets, what to do if someone is unconscious, how to save someone with a boogie board, a fun beach game and much more. Sadly we could not go in the water to practice our ocean swimming because it had been storming, so the water was dirty, but we all had a great time and hope to go back next year!
Year 6
In Year 6 we have recently finished a unit on multiplication and division, which included different ways to multiply multi-digit numbers. The new lattice method was a big hit with some students and can also be used to multiply decimals.
On Wednesday 29 October the Year 6 cohort had their water safety program day at Altona Beach.
We learnt about the rip currents and how to stay safe at the beach. We also learned CPR. Although we couldn’t go into the water because the water conditions were poor we still had a great day with life lessons learnt!
