Junior Learning Community

Welcome back to Term 4! We have a busy term ahead in Year 1!

In Mathematics, we’ve been exploring the topics of Data and Location. Students have been actively collecting and recording data by asking a variety of questions—some requiring yes or no answers, and others allowing for a range of responses. We've also enjoyed practicing how to give and follow directions, moving people and objects to different places as part of our learning.

In Literacy, we’ve been learning about new letter sounds, such as the letter c making the /s/ sound and g making the /j/ sound. Students have discovered that this happens when c or g is followed by the letters e, i, or y. We’ve also been practising reading and writing our new tricky words: always, animal, and open

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, our focus is on Science. Students will be exploring concepts from both Physical and Biological Sciences. In Physical Science, we’ll investigate how the movement of objects is influenced by factors such as size, shape, and the forces of push and pull. We'll also explore how light and sound are produced by different sources and how they can be detected through our senses. In Biological Science, students will learn about the external features of living things and how these creatures are suited to environments that meet their basic needs, such as food, water, and shelter. Additionally, we’ll look at how living things grow, change over time, and produce offspring similar to themselves.

RRRRs

This term we have reintroduced the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships Program. Our students have begun learning about emotional triggers - the feelings and situations that can make us upset, frustrated, or sad and exploring calming strategies to help manage these emotions in positive ways.

We’ve also been focusing on knowing and showing respect, understanding that respect is shown not only through our words, but also through our actions and how we treat others. This week, we have explored different scenarios to help students identify what respectful behaviour looks like in a range of situations and how they can demonstrate it in their daily interactions.

Year 2 News

Year 2 Sleepover What a fantastic night we shared! Our students and teachers had a wonderful time at their first school sleepover. We were so proud of how everyone behaved, supported one another, and showed great resilience. Please enjoy some of the photos from the event below.

Grandparents Day  Just a reminder — Year 2 will present a special prayer at the Grandparents Day Assembly on Friday, 24 October. If you haven’t already sent in a photo of your child with their grandparent(s), please email it to francescadovey@sjcobram.catholic.edu.au by Friday, 17 October at 4pm. We would love to include as many children as possible in our presentation.

Sport / Library / LOTE Reminder For the remainder of Term 4, Grade 2’s Sport and LOTE/Library lessons will be held on Mondays. Our second Sport lesson will take place on Thursdays. Please ensure students come dressed in appropriate uniform and footwear on those days, as well as their library bag/books.
