Student Refections

Youth Ministry

On Friday 17th October the Year 11 Youth Ministry students from Avila College ran a session with the Year 6 students all about the gifts of God. They delivered a very imaginative and engaging RE hour, where the students were able to use their knowledge of the gifts of the Holy Spirit to solve fictional situations. Here are some reflections from our Year 6 students:

Today, some of the Year 11 students from Avila came to Holy Family to teach the Year Sixes about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. To warm up, we started with a game of reverse charades. There would be one member selected from each group and the group had to reenact the word on the board. After that we all came together to watch a cartoon video about people’s gifts, which give them individuality. After that, we discussed what our gifts were, and what gives us our own individuality. We were given a scenario where there were trolls that we had to run away from. At each part, we were faced with a challenge that we had to overcome using different gifts such as kindness, imagination, love etc. This was a really good representation of different gifts of God that we have, that we can use to overcome things. After that, we got to color in a fruit, and write what we thought was our biggest strength. We then stuck them on a tree, showing all of our different qualities. The Avila students and us read a prayer to finish off the session. I personally really enjoyed it, and was taught about the gifts of God.

The Avila students came in the morning to have a religious incursion with us. I think most of us had fun while playing fun games with the Avila students. It was fun to play games and pray. We played a game called “the troll game”. In the troll game there were two gifts you could pick to get past a troll or goblin. On the first one we had to find shelter under a cave but a troll was guarding it, so there were three options, the gift of kindness, the gift of humour, the gift of athleticism. My group chose kindness and humour to get onto the troll’s good side. It was really fun to pick and choose and see what other peers had chosen in groups. The next obstacle was a goblin defending a bridge you needed to cross, there were three options again, gift of art, gift of invention, gift of inclusivity. My group chose art and invention so we could paint in the goblin’s eyes and invent our own reliable bridge. Then the last obstacle was to make our own gift, there was a rescue boat and it had to get past the water troll under the bridge. My group made the gift of common sense and we just had the boat go around the bridge.

Another game we played was reverse charades, you had a team member look away from the board and behind them the board showed a word and you had to use charades to tell your person on what the charade was and as soon as they thought they had found out they would say the word and the team would either say that it’s right or say that it’s not right.

We also learnt about individuality and ended up writing our best traits on a fruit and then colouring the fruit. We then prayed with the Avila students and then gave thanks to them for coming and setting up this incursion.

I really enjoyed the Avila girls coming to teach us about religion and the gifts, they were all kind, friendly, funny and made us feel comfortable when talking to them. I loved all the games, especially the charades one because it was funny to see people go up and guess the word as we tried to act it out. I also really liked the adventure one with the goblins because it was fun for my table to pick a gift that would be useful for that situation, it was also funny to hear all the other tables answers. The Avila girls really helped me learn about the different gifts for example, kindness, humor, etc.  and how everyone has a different gift that is unique. I had loads of fun and I thank the Avila girls for taking the time to make us understand the Gifts of God.

On Friday the 17.10.25 the Year 11 Avila girls came to Holy Family School, and they taught us Year 6 students about the gifts of God and ourselves. It was really fun and cool to learn about, we did heaps of things! Firstly the kind Avila girls showed us a presentation on what the ‘Gifts Of God’ fully means. I learnt that the Gifts of God is really what gifts we have, what gifts God himself has given us. Then we got to play a few games, guess the movie, reversed charades (which was my favourite) and then after the really fun games, we got into the real lesson. We were put into situations and then we had to pick the right 2 out of 3 gifts to escape whatever situation we are put in. It was super interesting. Then we had to write down our gifts we think we really use in our daily lives and the gifts that define us! I picked kindness, creativity, determination and a good sports mindset. I really enjoyed and appreciated all the effort the Avila girls put into this incursion!

Today the Avila Youth Ministry students came to the grade 6’s and taught us about the gifts of God. We played fun games like reverse charades, guess the movies and this scenario game where you got to pick two gifts to survive two days on an island. We also coloured fruits, made our own gifts and got to pick our own cutie mark which is the marks that are on the My Little Pony characters to give them their own individuality. It was great to interact with the Avila girls and get to learn new things about them and the gifts. They taught us a lot and I'm so grateful to have them come and work with us today. It was a great learning session and I can't wait to see them for Advent.
